• It is refereed or peer reviewed

Mainly involves four parties:

• Scholars

• The efficiency and fairness of the review
process
• The timeliness of publication

Quality control for the content
• Screening submissions
• Reviewing manuscripts
• Suggesting revisions
• Corresponding with authors
• Overseeing the final copy.

Their main concern is advancing knowledge in


their field, creating a prestigious journal,
increasing the potential impact of the journal, and
obtaining the support of the publisher.
Publishers
Getting the journal into the marketplace.
• A profit making.
• They are concerned about holding costs
down and raising subscription rates to
create a healthy profit margin.
Subscribers

• Institutions and libraries


– Provide access to the most prestigious
journals for their faculty and students.
The Role of Scholar
• Development and dissemination of
scholarly information / new knowledge.
• Develop intellectual property capacity.
Types of Articles
Type of Article Description
Literature review Also known as a ‘survey of the literature,’ a
lit review provides a historical overview of
the published work in a field. Often a lit
review reframes the history of scholarly
dialogue to present a new direction or
hypothesis for next steps

Empirical study The term ‘empirical study’ is most often


used in the social sciences (e.g.
psychology), and refers to a paper
describing the results of an experiment or
controlled study. A strong empirical study
paper includes a review of literature,
methodology, statistical analysis, findings
and discussion.

Type of Article Description

Case analysis Case analyses appear in different fields –


medical/clinical practice, business, and
law.. A case analysis presents the salient
details of a practical situation and
discusses its challenges, outcomes and
implications.

Theoretical analysis A theoretical analysis provides a framework


for thinking about ideas or issues in a field
of study. These articles are common in the
humanities and also in fields like business
management, communications and the
social sciences.

Clinical trial Like empirical studies, clinical trials


describe the methodology,
implementation and results of
controlled studies.

Book review Book reviews appear regularly in


scholarly journals, providing insight
and opinion on recently published
scholarly books.
From concept stage to
completion
• Author submits manuscript to academic journal editor
• Editor determines whether manuscript has sufficient merit to be
reviewed by editorial board or selected external reviewers
• Manuscript sent back to the author with a rejection letter or on to
reviewers
• Reviewers return the manuscript to the editor with comments and
recommendations (depending on peer review model)
• Editor sends manuscript back to the author with either a rejection
letter or a request for revisions
• Author revises manuscript and resubmits to editor
• Editor (sometimes) sends revised manuscript back to external
reviewers
• Editor accepts or rejects manuscript
• Author provides editing or proofing of final copy before publication
• Paper is eventually published in journal

• Akses percuma kepada jurnal-jurnal ilmiah yang

diterbitkan di Malaysia.
