Here are some other active
volcanoes in the Philippines:
MT. MAYON
Located in Albay, Bicol
Region
•it has erupted 50 times
from 1616 up to the
present.
• It's most devastating
eruption was on 1766 that
buried the entire town of
Cagsawa
TAAL VOLCANO
Located in the province of
Batangas
• has already erupted 38
times up to present
•active smallest volcano
in the world.
MT. KANLAON
Located in Negros Island

•has erupted at least 25

times from 1886 up to
present.
• It's last major eruption
happened in 1996
MT. BULUSAN
Located in San Nicolas,
Batangas

•has erupted 15 times from

1886 to 2007
•is the fourth most active
volcano in the Philippines
after Mayon, Taal, and
Kanlaon.
HIBOK-HIBOK
Also called Catarman Volcano

Located in Camiguin
Island
• has already erupted
seven times since its first
eruption in1827. It last
erupted in 1952.
•It formed the volcanic
cone Mt.Vulcan destroyed
Catarman town, leaving
behind the Sunken
Cemetery and Gui- ob
Church Ruins.
DIDICAS VOLCANO
Submarine Volcano
Volcanic island in the
province of Cagayan

• one of the smallest

and most active
volcanoes in the
Philippines
•has erupted seven
times from 1733 up to
1990
MT. BANAHAW
Located at the boundary
of Laguna and Quezon

•has erupted four

times since 1733. It
last erupted in 1909
• It is considered as a
" holy or sacred
mountain"
MT. MAKATURING
Located at Lanao Del
Sur( BARMM)
•one of the highest
volcano in the
Philippines
( stratovolcano)
• has erupted 10 times
since 1882
SIGNS OF AN IMPENDING
VOLCANIC ERUPTION
THE FOLLOWING ARE THE THREE SIGNS THAT INDICATE THAT
AN ERUPTION IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN:
• SEISMIC WAVES- As magma rises up towards the Earth's
surface,it causes rocks to snap and break that sends off
short period seismic waves. But as magma moves through
an open conduit, it generates long period seismic
waves.Volcanic Eruptions can be predicted by analyzing
various seismic waves gathered and recorded.
• GROUND DEFORMATION- the ground surface rises up or
sinks down as magma either moves up or withdraws.
• GAS EMISSIONS- As magma rises towards the surface , the
pressure on it drops and dissolved gases escape through
the fumaroles and active vents.
Others commonly observed signs that a volcano is
about to erupt:

• increase in the frequency of

volcanic quakes with rumbling
sounds
Others commonly observed signs that a volcano is
about to erupt:

• increase steaming
activity, change in color of
steam emission from
white to gray
Others commonly observed signs that a volcano is about to erupt:

•crater glows due to

presence of magma at or
near the crater
Others commonly observed signs that a volcano is about to erupt:

• Ground Swells, ground tilts and

ground fissures
Others commonly observed signs that a volcano is
about to erupt:

• Localized landslides, rockfalls, etc.( That are

not attributable to heavy rains)
Others commonly observed signs that a volcano is about to
erupt:

• increase in the extent of drying up of vegetation

Others commonly observed signs that a volcano is about to erupt:

• Increase in the
temperature of hot
springs and crater lake
Others commonly observed signs that a volcano is about to
erupt:

• Drying up of springs and wells around

the volcano
Others commonly observed signs that a volcano is about to erupt:

•Variation in the
Chemical content of
springs and crater lakes
within the vicinity of the
volcano
Others commonly observed signs that a volcano is about to erupt:

•Development of new thermal areas

and/or reactivation of old ones
PHREATIC ERUPTION
-explode without warning
-steam blast eruption

TOOLS FOR
RECOGNIZING VOLCANIC
HAZARD
Seismometers/ Seismographs- instruments that
detect and record earthquakes.
Tiltmeters- measure extremely subtle changes in a
volcano's slope

Gas Samples-the gas

emanating from a
volcano vents and
cratercan tell
scientist what is
happening deep
beneath th earth
Thermal Imagers- special cameras carried by
aircrafts or satellites can take pictures of the heat
emitted by volcanoes. These thermal images help
researchers identify new lava flows
RADAR MAPPING INSTRUMENTS
Radar Mappers carried by aircraftand satellites
produce remarkably detailed 3 dimensional
maps of the Earths surface . They help
researcher predict where lava flows might travel.
- the institutions that monitors and issues warnings on
volcanic and seismic activities
PHIVOLCS developed criteria for several alert
levels that indicate the current state of an
impending volcanic eruption.
• The alert system ranges from Alert LevEl 0 (lowest) to Alert
5( highest)
• ALERT LEVEL 0. No Alert
• ALERT LEVEL 1.Abnormality observed. There is low seismic
activityand no imminent eruption
• ALERT LEVEL 2. There is an increasing unrest. Moderate
levels of seismic activity are observed and probable magma
movement could eventually lead to eruption
• ALERT LEVEL 3. There is an increasing tendency towards
eruption. Relatively high and increasing unrest recorded
and there can be a possible eeuption within 2 weeks
• ALERT LEVEL 4. Hazardous eruption is imminent. There is
an intense unrest which includes earthquakes . Moreover,
there is possible eruption within 24 hours.
• ALERT LEVEL 5. Hazardous eruption is in progress
