PROPERTIES OF MATTER

1. Extensive properties depend on the amount of material

- Volume, Mass, Size, Weight, Length

1. Intensive Properties depend on the type of material

- Color, Odor, Luster, Malleability, Ductility, Conductivity, Hardness,

Pressure, Freezing (Boiling, Melting) point, Solubility
PROPERTIES OF MATTER
1. Color - presence of light
2. Odor - perception of the sense of smell
3. Luster - shininess of the surface
4. Malleability - ability of material to be hammered into desired shape
PROPERTIES OF MATTER
● Property - is a distinguishing quality of an object made of matter

1. Color
2. Shape
3. Size
4. Temperature
5. Weight - how heavy or how light an object is

● Matter - takes up space & has mass

○ Mass - measurement of the amount of matter
○ Volume - measurement of the amount of space aN object occupies
● Length - measured distance or dimension from one end to another
PROPERTIES OF MATTER
● You use sense organs in describing the properties of matter
- Sense of sight, touch, smell
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
● Physical Properties of Matter
consists of:

1. Color
2. Size
3. Shape
4. Texture
5. State
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
● Physical Properties of Matter - observable qualities that do not change

1. Solubility
2. Brittleness
3. Porosity
4. Elasticity
5. Flexibility
SOLUBILITY
● Solubility - the matter’s ability to be dissolved in another substance
BRITTLENESS
● Brittleness - the matter’s ability of being easily broken down into pieces
POROSITY
● Porosity - the matter’s ability to absorb liquid, gas, and allow them to
pass through
FLEXIBILITY
● Flexibility - the matter’s ability to be bent without breaking easily
● The more bendable a matter is, the more flexible it is
CHEMICAL CHANGE
● Chemical Change happens when:

1. Bubbles are formed

2. Heat is released
3. Materials change color
4. New materials are formed
