HISTORICAL

MATERIALISM
And
HUMAN
PERSONALITY
Historical materialism
Historical materialism is the term used to describe Karl Marx's theory of history.
Marx locates historical change in the rise of class societies and the way humans
labor together to make their livelihoods. For Marx and his lifetime collaborator,
Engels, the ultimate cause and moving power of historical events are to be found
in the economic development of society and the social and political upheavals
wrought by changes to the mode of production. Historical materialism provides a
challenge to the view that historical processes have come to a close and that
capitalism is the end of history. Although Marx never brought together in one
published work a systemic or comprehensive description of historical materialism,
his key ideas are woven into variety of works from the 1840s onward. Since
Marx's time, the theory has been modified and expanded. It now has many
Marxist and non-Marxist variants.
Historical Materialism and Karl Marx

The 19th century German social

thinker, Karl Marx, approached the
nature of western society from a
different perspective, that is from the
perspective “economy.” Critiquing
primarily a society characterized by
unparalleled economic processes such
as capitalism and industrialization, he
saw a “modern” society as not an end
in itself but a transitional phase of
what he believed is a historically
shaped social order socialism. Karl Marx
How Marx viewed “modern” society from the
perspective of economy- the material conditions of the
people- lies in the core of his social theory. Imagine a
simple production line in a factory, manufacturing a
single product by an assembly of workers who are
trained to do only a single type of activity.

Translating Marx: The communist
manifesto
In 2000, the historian and enthnologist, Zeus
A. Salazar, translated Karl Marx’s famous
book, Communist Manifesto (Marx , 1848),
into Filipino- “Manifesto ng Partido
Komunista: isinalin sa orihinal na aleman at
nilapatan ng anotasyon”. Reading from the
original German text and providing
annotations intended for Filipino readers and
intellectuals, the book is a rare treat for serious
scholars of Marx, social movements, and
Philippine studies. (Image of Zeus Salazar)
HUMAN PERSONALITY
Personality refers to individual differences in characteristics
patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. The study of
personality focuses on two broad areas: One is understanding
individual differences in particular personality characteristics,
such as sociability or irritability.

At its most basic, personality is the characteristic patterns of

thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that make a person unique. It is
believed personality arises from within the individual and
remains fairy consistent throughout life. Example of personality
can be found in how we describe others people’s traits.
WHY IS HUMAN PERSONALITY
IMPORTANT?
Personality development not only makes
you look good and presentable but also
helps you face the world with a smile.
Personality development goes a long way
in reducing stress and conflicts. It
encourages individuals to look at the
brighter sides of life.
