REACTION OF METALS WITH OXYGEN

Potassium is an alkali metal that is Magnesium is an alkali earth group

very reactive Ex.
Ex. Magnesium + oxygen = Magnesium oxide
Potassium + Oxygen = Potassium Oxide 2Mg + O² = 2MgO
4k + O² = 2k²O
REACTION OF METAL WITH WATER

When metal reacts with water, a metal hydroxide and

hydrogen are formed.
Ex.
• Sodium + water = soium hydroxide + hydrogen
2Na + 2H²O = 2NaOH + H²
REACTION OF METALS WITH DILUTE
ACIDS
Metal react with dilute acids to form salts and hydrogen gas.
• Metal + Dilute acid = Salt + Hydrogen
Ex. The reaction between zinc and dilute sulfuric acid produces the salt zinc
sulfate and hydrigen gas.
Zinc + Sulfuric acid = Zinc sulfate + Hydrogen
Question
The reaction of aluminium with dilutic acid
• Aluminium + Hydricloric acid = Aluminium cloride + Nitrogen
(Al + 2HCI = AlCI³ + N)
