Four Aspects

1 Simple tense 3 Perfect

2 Progressive 4 Perfect progressive

English has only two ways of forming
1 a tense from the verb alone: the past
and the present. For example, we
drove and we drive.

2
To form other verb tenses, you have to add a
form of have, be or will in front of the verb.
These are called helping, or auxiliary verbs.
Let's get started!
Is the action finished? How
A re y o u
re a d y ? long did the action happen?
Was the action repeated? Did
the action happen at a known
or unknown time? Is the action
a habit? Is the action planned
or spontaneous?
Simple Tense
Simple tenses usually refer to a single 1
action. In general, simple tenses express Simple Past
facts and situations that existed in the 2 Simple Present
past, exist in the present, or will exist in
the future. 3 Simple Future
Simple Present
The simple present tense is often used to
show repetitive or habitual actions and
general truths. It is also used to tell an
activity that is happening now and in
introducing quotations.
Simple Future
The simple future indicates an action that is
bound to happen. It usually employs the
words will and shall to emphasize that it is
still going to happen in the future.
