Rationale
Accordingly, the key to the educational process lies
in the hands of the teacher. High School teachers teach
various subjects, one of which is the Music, Arts
Physical Education and Health (MAPEH) and
considered to be one of the challenging subjects among
the others. Besides having four components which
focus on the holistic development of the child, the
weakness of most if not all MAPEH teachers is the
Music. Unfortunately, there is shortage of musician
teachers who are supposed to give strong foundation in
music to their students. This case is very evident in the
mother school of Tandag City, the Jacinto P. Elpa
National High School. Hence, this study will focus at
determining the challenges of the MAPEH teachers in
teaching Music.
Gantan (2015) had put emphasis to Music as this
subject has its own language and needs to be treated
differently from the other components of MAPEH. It is
not merely a theoretical subject, but focuses mainly on
the psychomotor and appreciative side of a learner. If the
teachers will only be teaching the theories, his endeavor
will be futile. The teachers must be well equipped with
the basic skills of the subject taught. This was seconded
by Borromeo (2008) as he stated that most of the
MAPEH majors lack the basic knowledge and skills in
teaching the subject appropriately.
On the other hand, this phenomenological qualitative
research which will determine the lived experiences and
challenges encountered by the teachers in teaching Music
will make the study unique among the other existing
studies.
Hence, based from the foregoing, the researcher
found it relevant to explore and determine the lived
experiences and challenges faced by the MAPEH
teachers in teaching Music in the public secondary
school of Jacinto P. Elpa National High School.
Moreover, the result of this study will be the basis
for proposed possible intervention program which
will aim at capacitating teachers in teaching Music
subject effectively. Also, this research has the
importance because it contributes to “music
education” lesson for more operational structure
and function and also aims at determining the
problems in “music education” lesson and brings to
solution offers.
1. What are the lived
experiences of MAPEH
Basic Research teachers who are teaching
Music?
Questions 2. What are the challenges of
MAPEH teachers in teaching
Music?
3. What is the proposed
intervention program based on
the results and findings of the
study?
A.Sampling

Research
The respondents of this study
are the ten (10) MAPEH
teachers of Jacinto P. Elpa
National High School. The

Methodology
researcher chooses the
respondents by the use of
Purposive Sampling to
determine the teachers who are
teaching MAPEH subject

C. Ethical Issues

Prior to the conduct of the online interview,

letter of consent will be sent to the respondents
via email. In conducting this study, the
researcher ensures that the respondents
understand the intent of participating and that
the confidentiality of their names and personal
information is ensured; only relevant details that
answered in the research interview guide are
included. The researcher will adhere to such
guidelines and laws in order to protect the
respondent’s privacy and rights.
D.Plan for Data Analysis

After the conduct of the online interview to the

respondents, the responses will be recorded and transcribed
by the researcher. After which, the researcher will then
analyze the responses and identify the “recurring themes”
from the Focus Group Discussion (FGD), codes will be
assigned.

The collected data will then be described using a

thematic approach, obtained findings will then be
commented and then conclusions will be obtained. In
the scope of the conclusions, the offers or proposed
intervention program will have been brought
forward.
