EXPRESS EACH OF THE FOLLOWING PERFECT

SQUARE TRINOMIAL AS A SQUARE OF BINOMIAL.

• x2 + 6x + 9
• x2 – 14x + 49
• x2 + 2x + 1
• x2 – 18x + 81
CONSIDER THE PROBLEM

The product of a number and four less than the

number is equal to 2. What is the number?
The problem can be written in
mathematical sentence as x(x – 4)= 2.
In standard form, the equation becomes
x – 4x – 2 = 0.
2

The expression x2 – 4x – 2 cannot be factored. We can employ another

method called completing the square to find the solutions.
X2 – 4X – 2 = 0 BY COMPLETING THE SQUARE.
1. Transpose the constant 2 to the right side of the equation.
x2– 4x = 2
2. Complete the square by adding the square of half coefficient of x, that is,
[1/2(- 4) ]2 = 4 to both sides of the equation.
x2 - 4x + 4 = 2 + 4
3. Write the left side as the square of a binomial.
(x – 2)2 = 6
4. Extract the square root of both side.
x – 2 = ± √6
5. Solve for x
x = 2 ±√6
6. Therefore, the values of x are
x = 2+√6 and x =2-√6

• c. x2 – 2x = 24
• d. p2 + 2p = 48
• e. 3x2 – 7x – 6 = 0

ASSIGNMENT

1. Do you agree that any quadratic equation can be solved by completing

the square? Justify your answer.
2. Identify a, b, c in the following quadratic equation
• 2x2 + 9x = 10
• -2x2 = 2 – 7x
• 6x – 1 = 2x2
• 10 + 7x – 3x2 = 0
• 2x (x – 6) = 5
SOLVING QUADRATIC EQUATION USING THE
QUADRATIC FORMULA
Write the following quadratic equations in standard form ax2 + bx + c = 0. Then identify the
values of a, b, and c.
• 2x2 + 9x = 10
• -2x2 = 2 – 7x
• 6x – 1 = 2x2
• 10 + 7x – 3x2 = 0
• 2x (x – 6) = 5

2x2 + 9x + 10 = 0
SIMPLIFY EACH OF THE FOLLOWING
EXPRESSIONS.
SOLVE THE FOLLOWING QUADRATIC
EXPRESSIONS USING THE QUADRATIC
FORMULA
• 2x2 – 7x + 3 = 0
• 6x2 – 7x = 3
• 3x2 – 4 = -6x
• 4x2 + 9x + 2 = 0
• 3x2 = x + 5
DISCRIMINANT OF QUADRATIC EQUATIONS

Preliminary Activity:
Evaluate the expression b2 – 4ac given the following values of a, b, and c.
1. a =1 , b = 5, c = 4
2. a = 2, b = 1, c = -21
3. a = 4, b = 4, c = 1
4. a = 1, b = -2, c = -2
5. a = 9, b = 0, c = 16
USING THE FORMULA, FIND THE DISCRIMINANT
OF THE FOLLOWING

1. x2 – 2x + 1 = 0
D = b2 – 4ac
D = (-2)2 – 4(1)(1)
D=4–4
D=0
Therefore the roots are real, rational, and equal.
3X2 – X – 2 = 0

D = b2 – 4ac
D = (- 1)2 – 4(3)(-2)
D = 1 + 24 D = 25
Since D ˃ 0 and a perfect square
Therefore the roots are real, rational, and unequal.
X2 – 6X + 7 = 0

D = b2 – 4ac D = (-6)2 – 4(1)(7)

D = 36 – 28
D = 8 Since
D ˃ 0 and not a perfect square.
Therefore the roots are real, irrational and unequal.
X2 – 4X + 5 = 0

D = b2 – 4ac
D = (-4)2 – 4(1(5)
D = 16 – 20
D=-4
Since D ˂ 0 therefore the roots are not real or imaginary.

EQUATION AND DETERMINE THE NATURE OF THE ROOTS.

1. + 5p – 3 = 0
2. + 9r + 14 = 0
3. + 5x + 10 = 0
4. – 7x = 30
