STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION IN INSTANT MESSAGING
TOWARDS THEIR SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

GUIA BERNARDINE A. DORADO

APRIL JOY U. PENDON

ONEIL B. SERUELO
Introduction
It serves the purpose of leading the reader from a
general subject area to a particular field of research.
It establishes the context of the research being
conducted by summarizing current understanding and
background information about the topic.
Introduction
An introduction is a mental road map that answers these
four questions:
➢ What am I going to study?
➢ Why is this topic important to investigate?
➢ What do I know about this topic?
➢ How will this study advance my knowledge?
Introduction
Everyone is relying to the communication technology nowadays, most
especially the younger generation. Communication technology refers to
the exchange of information and intuition or ideas, which allow the
majority of individuals to get the details of all sides. Interaction has made
simple to our loved ones on the other side of the world through mobile
phones, e mails and social networks, such as Facebook, twitter or
messenger.
Introduction
Instant Messaging (IM) is a type of online chat that offers real-time text
transmission over the internet. A LAN messenger operates in a similar way
over a local area network. Short messengers are typically transmitted between
two parties, when each user chooses to complete a thought and select “send”.
Some IM applications can use push technology to provide real-time test, which
transmits messages character by character as they are composed. More
advanced instant messaging can add file transfer, clickable hyperlinks, voice
over IP or video chat.
Introduction
Instant Messaging (IM) is the most attention-grabbing, immediate and convenient form
of communication. People would sooner leave home without their wallets that their phones
(Trumpia, 2008). It is an efficient tool that enables to send short, written messages via
mobile phone which has undoubtedly developed communication in certain respects. IM
simply means messages that are sent if the person you’re communicating has an internet or
data connection. IM allows people to use Internet chat conversation to relay information
back and forth in real time. It is often used as a social networking tool, but many companies
also use IM as a part of daily business routine (George N. Root III, pp 2017).
Introduction

Students use IM as their way of staying connected with their

friends, loved ones, classmates or school mates and also their
teachers. Often times, IM is used for setting up a meeting or for
asking questions about a certain topic, especially topics about
school. Students theses days are also busy not only with their
projects and home but they also have paper works.
Introduction
IM can be also entertaining. You can send appealing stickers, emojis and
GIFs that were customized to deliver amazing user experience, communicate
with friends along with personalized chat, people can create groups and share
their views among added participants and you can also make a group chat
which includes your old classmates from your past schools. Many social media
messaging app connect users with advance testing features. You can add
updates, customized them with multiple editing options and even share the
content on direct chat or group chats.
Purpose of the Study
The Purpose of the Study illustrates what the study
will do, which should reflect the statement of the
problem. The purpose also discusses how you will
conduct your study and the kinds of comparisons you
will make.
Purpose of the Study
The most essential component to the purpose of the study is
introducing the Research Questions and Hypotheses (if
applicable) of your study. It is written in the form of the
hypothesis, question, or research problem, briefly explaining
your rationale, methodological approach, highlighting the
potential outcomes your study can reveal, and describing the
remaining structure of the paper.
Purpose of the Study
This study was conducted to determine the students’ perception in instant messaging
towards their social development.

Specifically, this study sought to answer the questions:

1. socio-demographic profile of the students in terms of:

a. Age

b. Sex

c. Place of Residence

d. Parents highest educational attainment

Purpose of the Study

2. What is the student’s perception in instant messaging

towards their social development in terms of:

a. Their way in communicating with other people using

instant message.

b. How they can gather new information from others.

Methods

Research methodology is the path through which

researchers need to conduct the research. It shows the
path through which these researchers formulate the
problem and objective and present the result from the
data obtained during the study period.
Methods
The method answers the two main questions:
1. How was the data collected or generated?
2. How was it analyzed?
The writing should be direct and precise and written in
the past tense.
Methods

This study was conducted to determined the students

perception in instant Messaging towards their social
development at Dumalag National High School in Dumalag,
Capiz during the school year 2017-2018.
Methods
A descriptive research design was employed in the study to describe the
respondents socio-demographic profile in terms if their age, sex, place of
residence and parents highest educational attainment and their perception on
instant messaging usage towards their social development. Since, another
purpose of the study were to examine the relationship between the socio
demographic profile and students perception on instant messaging, it is deemed
appropriate to make use of descriptive research design. A quantitative research
primarily employed numerical data. That is information were obtained,
analyzed and interpret in numerical form.
Results
They are based upon the information gathered as a
result of the methodology or methodologies being
applied. They should be without bias or interpretation,
and arranged in a logical sequence, and should always
be written in the past tense.
Results
Always remember:
In general, the content of your results section should
include the following:
1. An introductory context for understanding the results
by restating the research problem that reinforces the
purpose of the study.
Results

2. Inclusion of non-textual elements, such as,

figures, charts, photos, maps, tables, etc. to
further illustrate the findings, if needed.
Results

3. A systematic description of your results,

highlighting for the reader observations that
most relevant to the topic under investigation.
Results

4. The page length of your results section is

guided by the amount and types of data to be
recorded.
Results

Table 1 shows the distribution of the respondents in terms

of their sex. The data revealed that 9 respondents (20.5%) are
males and 35 respondents (79.5%) are females. The table
suggest that female respondents outnumbered the male
respondents.
Table 1: Distribution of respondents in terms of sex.

SEX FREQUENCY PERCENTAGE

Male 9 20.5
Female 35 79.50
TOTAL 44 100.0
Discussion
The purpose of the discussion is to interpret and
describe the significance of your findings in light of what
was already known about the research problem being
investigated and to explain any new understanding or
insights that emerged as a result of your study of the
problem.
Discussion
The discussion will always connect to the introduction by way
of the research questions or hypotheses you posed and the
literature you reviewed, but it does not simply repeat or
rearrange the introduction. It clearly explains how the study has
moved the reader's understanding of the research problem
forward from where you left them at the end of the introduction.
Discussion

Always remember!
• Be concise and clear with the point.
• Avoid using jargon.
• Follow a logical stream of thought.
Discussion
• Use the present verb tense, especially for
established facts; however, refer to specific works
and references in the past tense.
• If needed, use subheadings to help organize your
presentation.
Discussions

It was found that 9 respondents (20.5%) are males and 35

respondents (79.5%) are females. As to place of residence,
out of 44 respondents 32 or 72.7% lives in rural area and
only 12 respondents or 23.7% percent in urban. This implies
that majority of the respondents live in rural area.
Discussions
In terms of highest educational attainment of father, 10 (22.7%)
were high school graduate, high school undergraduate shared a
frequency of 4 (9.1%), college graduate, 20 (45.5%), 2 (4.5%) of
them were at least elementary graduate, 3 (6.8%) were college
undergraduate, 5 (11.4%) were elementary level. This implies that
majority of the respondents father are college graduate.
Conclusion
Conclusion offers a chance to leave a lasting
impression by highlighting key points in the analysis
or findings. It answers the "so what?" question by
placing the study within the context of past research
about the topic being investigated.
Conclusion

It elaborates on the significance of your findings. It

offers new insight and creative approaches for
framing/contextualizing the research problem based
on the results of the study.
Conclusion
Always remember!
• The conclusions must be clear and in simple language.
• Do not simply reiterate the results or the discussion.
• Indicate opportunities for future research, as long as it
wasn’t done in the discussion section of the research paper.
Conclusion

Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions

were made:

1. Senior High School students (Grade 11 and 12) are female,

living in rural areas and whose parents were college graduate.
Conclusion

2.The respondents have an undecided perspective in instant

messaging towards their social development.

a. The respondents perspective in instant messaging in terms

of their way of coimmunicating other people stated that most
of the statements described them somewhat.
Activity 2: Who Am I?
Direction: Determine which part of a mini-
research paper do the following items belong.
1. English as a global language has undoubtedly dignified
its standing on global communication essentially targeting
both oral and written skills. In the Philippines however, as
observed by the researcher, speaking English seems to be
very difficult most especially to students in secondary level.
2. The data collected where analyzed in quantitative
method such that the (1) information about profile
the students’ which includes strand were coded with
numbers; . . .
3. Attitude of Grade 12 SHS Academic Tracks
Students Towards Speaking in English.
4. The study concludes that Grade 12 senior high
school academic track students have positive attitude
towards speaking in English and that they view
speaking in English as important in general.
