    Virtual memory allows programs and data to be stored on a computer's hard disk when there is not enough RAM to hold everything in memory. When an application is not actively being used, it is moved from RAM to the hard disk to free up space in physical memory. Then, when needed again, it can be quickly loaded back into RAM from the virtual memory on the hard disk. This helps computers run more programs than the amount of RAM installed by using the hard disk as an extension of physical memory.
