Q. 1
Solution:
IHP = PmLAN
Mean Height of Diagram = Area/Length = 400/80 = 5 mm
Pm = Mean Height x Spring Scale = 5 x 2.5/1.5 = 8.33 bar.
L = 1600 mm or 1.6 m
A = d2 / 4 = . (600/1000)2 / 4 = 0.283 sq. M.
N = 6/2 = 3
IHP = 8.33 x 1.6 x 0.283 x 3 = 11.315 kW per cylinder
IHP = 11.315 x 6 = 67.89 kW for the engine. Ans.
Q 2.
Solution:
Consumption of an engine is proportional to the cube of the ship’s
speed
If normal speed is V knots – the corresponding consumption at this
speed would be proportional to V3. Assume consumption figure is per
hour.
The ship travels at V knots for 6 hours; 1.2 V knots for 8 hours; & 0.9 V
knots for 10 hours
The corresponding consumptions at these speeds would be
proportional to V3 for 6 hours; (1.2V)3 for 8 hours; and (0.9V)3 for 10
hours.
Therefore total consumption per day would be proportional to V3 x 6 +
1.728 V3 x 8 + 0.729 V3 x 10.
Total consumption per hour would be 1.12975 V3.
Therefore the percentage variation in consumption from normal when
the engine is operated at these new speeds would be an increase of
12.975% Ans.
Q3
Solution:
Voyage cons for main engine can be calculated assuming
displacement same in each case from the following formula:
Cons 1/Cons 2 = (V1/V2)2 x Voy Distance 1/ Voy Distance 2
Solution:
Cons at normal speed of 14 knots = 0.12 + 0.001 x 143 = 2.864
tonnes /hr
• Voyage duration = 1500/14 = 107.143 hours
Voyage consumption = 107.143 x 2.864 = 306.857 tonnes Ans (a)
• Daily fuel consumption at 14 knots = 2.864 x 24 = 68.736
tonnes
Reduced consumption = 68.736 – 10 = 58.736 tonnes/day or
2.447 tonnes/hr
Speed at reduced consumption: 2.447 = 0.12 + 0.001V3
Reduced speed = 13.25 knots Ans (b)
