2 Main Types of
Tissue

1. Meristem Tissue
2. Permanent Tissue
A. surface tissue
B. fundamental tissue
What is a meristem?
• A plant grows because of meristems.
• Part of the plant where growth is fastest.
Two Types of Meristems
 Apical meristem – found on the tip of the stems and roots
Lateral meristem (lateral buds) – involved in the formation of
branches

What is a cambium?
 a ring of meristematic tissues found inside a mature stem
allows growth in diameter or increase in stems

 Vascular cambium – produce new layers of vascular tissues

Cork cambium – produce new surface tissue or cork
Why meristematic
tissue is also known as
undifferentiated tissue?
What is the
difference between
apical meristem and
lateral meristem?
Surface Tissue – cover
and protect
Fundamental
tissue – fill most
spaces
