Barbados Unemployment: 10.1% (July 2016 ILO)
Youth Unemployment: approx. 2-3 times higher.

Aging fisherfolk population: 30% of all Barbadians


are over 65.

The Opportunity?
To introduce a new generation to art and science
of fisheries: provide options for a viable career and
a means of food and income security.
Leverage a rich Barbadian legacy of fishing, and
the accrued experience of the staff of the Fisheries
Division of the Ministry of Agriculture

The Target?
At risk youth and unemployed
women 18-25 with and interest
but little to no previous
experience in fisheries.

Format
8/10 week program blending practical
and theoretical training.

Goal
To dispense basic training to new entrants
for a career in the fishing industry.

Long Term Goal

The objective of the FDTP is to provide young


fisherfolk entering the profession with effective up-
to-date training, using the institutional knowledge of
the Department of Fisheries and the wisdom and
expertise of its personnel and current Barbadian
fisherfolk.

Build a Foundation for Growth
in the Industry

The training will be practical and will also show the


participants the theoretical reasons for certain practices.

This will give them the tools to think creatively as they


modifying and improve these practices.

Knowledge Management
A precursor to the training will be the Knowledge
Management Phase in which the intellectual resources of the
Fisheries Department are organized and systematized to
develop a method for preparing and delivering Fisheries
Training.

This will provide the baseline for staff of the DOF to develop
and deliver future training.

Project Brief
Over a period of 12 months, to plan, develop
and implement a pilot course of training which
will take an unexperienced participant and
equip her with the necessary practical skills
supported by the theoretical knowledge to be a
capable apprentice fisherperson.
