USE OF PATIENTS FOR

TEACHING PURPOSE

IS THE USE OF REAL CLINCIAL PATIENTS
FOR CLINICAL TEACHING ETHICAL?
 In western countries which have licensure procedures for
physiotherapists, the students handle patients only after successful
completion of course work.

 In India, students start handling patients from the second or third year
onwards immediately after they have completed their basic courses.

 Sometimes the student may not have been successful in anatomy or

exercise therapy but would have completed minimum requirements to
be promoted to the third year. This is a great risk.
 SOMETIMES STUDENT MIGHT BE UNAWARE OF AN
UNTOWARD INCIDENT OR MIGHT NOT RECOGNIZE IT.

 IN SUCH A CASE continuous supervision is necessary during all student

initiated treatment sessions.

 Moreover, the patient must be aware that he is being treated by a student

and the supervising therapist must be aware that the patient has the right
to demand that a therapist see him instead.

 THE SUPERVISING THERAPIST MUST ENSURE PERIODIC

EVALUATION AND MODIFY THE TREATMENT IF NECESSARY.

 This aids learning as well as ensures that the patient does not meet with
any detrimental effects due to the student therapist.
 As for the responsibility of the teacher towards the students, care must
be taken to ensure that appropriate patients are given to them and the
therapist is always available for guidance.

 This will promote learning as well as ensure that the patient gets
appropriate treatment.
