What is
poetry?
POEM
-is a piece of writing in which
the words are chosen for their
beauty and sound and are
carefully arranged, often in
short lines.
ELEMENTS OF POETRY

• LINE
-is a unit of language
in which the poem is
divided
EXAMPLE
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

2.STANZA
- is used to describe the main
building block of a poem. It is a unit
of poetry composed of lines that
relate to a similar thought or topic--
like a paragraph in prose or a verse
in a song
EXAMPLE
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

3.RHYTHM
It can be described
as the beat and pace
of a poem.
RHYTHM
The best method of
understanding this is to read the
poem aloud and understand the
stressed and unstressed
syllable.
4.METER
-is a unit of rhythm in
poetry, the pattern of the
beats. It is called a foot.

Poetic rhythms are
measured in
metrical feet.
EXAMPLE
Poem with 10 syllables
(stressed-unstressed
pattern) = Pentameter (5
metrical feet)
METER
Rhythm and meter form the
rhythmic structure of a
poem.
(ex: iambic pentameter,
trochaic tetrameter, etc.
5.RHYME
-is the repetition of identical
or similar concluding
syllables in different words

-is the poet's attitude toward the

subject matter, as interpreted by
the reader
