Communication Ports

USB

 The USB port is used for initial

configuration and local maintenance
or servicing of the VESDA-E
Detector using the Xtralis VSC
software on a local computer

 The USB port must not be used for

a permanent field connection. For
example, do not use a USB to
Ethernet or USB to WIFI adapter to
connect the detector to a LAN
USB
 The USB port must be used to
initially set up either the Ethernet or
WiFi connections
VESDA
USB Host Mode

• USB port allows direct PC connection for configuration and

maintenance
• Upgrade firmware, load configuration and extract events logs
using a USB key only.
VESDA
USB Host Mode

• Connecting a memory stick to the USB port on a VESDA-E

Detector will require the use of an adapter.
• USB B Plug to USB A Jack adapter will be needed.
Communication Ports

Ethernet

 The Ethernet port is used for

a permanent network
connection to the VESDA-E
detector

 A standard Ethernet cable is

used when connecting the
VESDA-E to a network switch
or router

WIFI

 WiFi is used to allow WIFI

connection between the
VESDA-E detector and PC’s
running Xtralis VSC or VSM
software

 WiFi will also allow the

VESDA-E detector to connect
to an Android or iOS (iPad)
device running the iVESDA
application

General Purpose Input (GPI)

 The GPI is a programmable input which can be configured to initiate a

number of different actions including: a Remote Reset function
(default), Mains OK (used to monitor a power supply), Standby Mode,
Disable (Isolate), Use Night Thresholds, Reset and Disable, and
Inverted Reset.

 The GPI can be set up as a monitored or unmonitored input. The

monitored GPI works on a contact closure. The unmonitored GPI
works on a voltage change.
GPI

Unmonitored General Purpose Input (GPI)

The Unmonitored GPI is a programmable input which operates on a voltage

change. A voltage input of between 5V and 30V signals GPI ON. Less than
2V signals GPI OFF.

 When the detector is disabled or set to standby via the GPI, the status
cannot be changed through the normal enable / disable function on the
front panel.

 When the night-time thresholds are invoked via the GPI, the clock
settings for day-start and night-start are overridden.
GPI

Monitored General Purpose Input (GPI)

The Monitored GPI senses contact closure and is

configurable to initiate the same actions as the unmonitored
GPI. “Reset” is the default setting.

 A closed contact signals GPI ON and open contact

signals GPI OFF.

 A 10K end of line resistor is used to allow the detector to

monitor for open circuit faults in the wiring

Installation Process

Mounting

 The VESDA-E detector can be mounted

in an upright or inverted position. Do not
mount the detector in a sideways
orientation

 Ensure the mounting surface is flat as

this allows an air tight seal to be
achieved between the sampling pipe and
the tapered pipe inlets on the detector  Minimum 50mm (2”) below
ceiling level
 Ensure that there is sufficient clearance  Minimum clearance of
to mount the detector 20mm (1”) is required
between the detector and a
wall or an obstruction for
both sides of the detector.

Installation Process

Mounting

 For Future Stax Module installation, clearance must be allowed

between the detector and ceiling/floor

 The ECO Gas Detection StaX (future product) provides gas

detection using the same pipe network as the VESDA-E. A
minimum clearance of 15cm (6”) is required between the VESDA-
E detector and ceiling/floor.

 The Automated Pipe Cleaning StaX (future product) provides a

means of cleaning the ASD pipe network. A minimum clearance of
30cm (12”) is required between the VESDA-E detector and
ceiling/floor.

 The Power Supply Unit StaX (future product) provides operating

power and battery recharge capability. A minimum clearance of
23cm (9”) is required between the VESDA-E detector and
ceiling/floor

The first step in replacing a VLP with a VESDA-E Detector is to

uninstall or remove the VLP unit from its designated location

 Power down the VLP detector

 Gently pull the sampling pipes out of the inlet manifold
 Remove the front cover of the VLP unit. The front cover
is removed by unscrewing the 4 cover screws.

What is iVESDA?
• Downloadable application that can be installed on
Android and iOS handheld devices to monitor and
maintain VESDA-E systems with unprecedented
ease
• Compatible with existing VESDA detectors residing
on the same VESDAnet as VESDA-E
• Provides detailed alarm, fault and other status
information such as smoke trends, airflow, filter life,
as well as viewing of important configuration
parameters such as pipes in use and smoke alarm
thresholds
• Future release of iVESDA will also provide
configuration capability for the entire VESDA system
as well as event log retrieval

98
How iVESDA Connects
 Connectivity between VESDA-E and iVESDA
can be established within the protected facility
using a standard WiFi network, or remotely via
the Internet
 Typical topology is where iVESDA, on a
handheld device, communicates with the entire
VESDAnet via a wireless router, and VESDA-E
acts as a gateway into the VESDAnet allowing
for backwards compatibility
 Before starting iVESDA the following must be
prepared and already in place
− The target detector must be configured to
communicate with a nearby access point
− The handheld device that will run iVESDA
must also communicate with the same
access point
− The target detector IP address must be
recorded for later use
− The target detector password must be
known
99
How iVESDA is Used
• With iVESDA the interaction and response to
the VESDA detection system is taken to a
completely new level of ease and portability
• Facility Managers now have a convenient
means of monitoring their entire VESDA
population for status, alarm, fault and
configuration information with a handheld
device, without the need for a PC and High
Level Interface, no matter where they are
located
• First Responders can receive live status
information to direct immediate response to
imminent threats and can monitor any spread of
the threat across the VESDA network
• Field Service Engineers can obtain system
diagnostic and maintenance information before
and during a site visit without the need for a
local hard wired connection, simplifying and
speeding up site visits
