Course Plan
Course learning outcomes
Able to explain, discuss, and summarize definitions of conflict, conflict resolution,
and conflict management.
Able to identify cases based on the types of conflict (Intrapersonal, interpersonal
conflict, intragroup, intergroup).
Able to describe the benefits and limitations of each conflict resolution strategy.

Able to analyse the factors that trigger conflict and its role in conflict resolution.

Able to apply numerous stages and theories of conflict resolution in a real life
context.

• Learning Methods:
• Synchronous:
Lectures are done using zoom/ google meet and it will be recorded. The video
will be uploaded to Elok following the lecture.

• Asynchronous:
Lecture materials (lecture video + other resources) will be uploaded before the
class. Students are asked to watch the learning videos and complete the quizzes.
Learning contract
1. Attendance minimum 75%, if it is less your final marks will not appear. Make
sure to fill in attendance in Elok.
2. Mute audio when lectures start. Turn on when invited to ask a question.
3. Please turn on video :
• First 5 minutes of meeting.
• Last five minutes of meeting.
• When asking a question.
4. Upload tasks on time. 1 day delay = 1 point reduction.

Midterm exam: Reflective Essay (1)
• You are asked to write about a conflict that you have once experienced in the
form of a reflective essay containing a maximum of 500 words. A detailed
explanation of the marking criteria is uploaded in Elok.

• Deadline: Essays are submitted to Elok.


Group assignment: Case analyses
Students present an analyses of a conflict either individually or in pairs:

Final exam: Reflective Essay (2)
• You are asked to write about a conflict that you have once experienced in the
form of a reflective essay containing a maximum of 1500 words (development r
of the midterm essay). A detailed explanation of the task is available on Elok.

• Deadline: Submission of essay is done through Elok.

Resolution
Definition of conflict
• “behavior in which people oppose one another in their thoughts, feelings,
and/or actions.” - The Mediation Center at El Centro College in Dallas.

• “Conflict is so fully a part of all forms of society that we should appreciate its
importance—for stimulating new thoughts, for promoting social change, for
defining our group relationships, for helping us form our senses of personal
identity, and for many other things we take for granted in our everyday lives. The
things we love, as well as those we despise are... shaped by social conflict” -
James Schellenberg.

• At the root of all conflicts are what psychologist Abraham Maslow called “unmet
needs.” —related to thoughts, beliefs, and emotions
Perspectives on conflict
Traditional • The traditional view is the early approach to
conflict which assumed that all conflict was bad
and to be avoided.
Humans-Relation • The conflict was treated negatively and discussed
with such terms as violence, destruction, and
irrationality to reinforce its negative implication.
Interactionist
Perspectives on conflict
Traditional • The human relations view of conflict treats conflict
as a natural and inevitable phenomenon and, so
cannot be eliminated from any organization.
Humans-Relation

• It also states that conflict could be beneficial in

Traditional • The interactionist view states that a minimum
level of conflict is beneficial for the group because
it maintains a certain level of creativity, self-
