 What is McKinsey 9 box?

The GE-McKinsey nine-box matrix:

A systematic approach for the multi-business
corporation to prioritize investments among
its business units.
 What is the McKinsey mindset?

McKinsey claims that it has no real hierarchy:

every idea, whether it comes from the
youngest business analyst or the oldest
partner, carries the same weight.

 At the same time, McKinsey has a definite

chain of command. If I disagreed with a
director over an issue, at the end of the day,
his opinion won out.
 What is the McKinsey matrix used for?

The GE-McKinsey Matrix is a portfolio

analysis tool used in corporate strategy to
analyze strategic business units or product
lines.

 This matrix combines two dimensions:

industry attractiveness and the competitive
strength of a business unit into a matrix.
