Objective/Topic:

Mitosis vs. Meiosis

Essential Question: What is the
difference between the general
process of mitosis (asexual
reproduction, cell growth and repair),
and meiosis (sexual reproduction) ….
Mitosis
• Mitosis is part of the process of cell division,
repair.
• Mitosis is essential for cells to reproduce,
whether they are a single-celled organism
(amoeba) or part of a multi-celled organism
(humans) that needs to grow.
• For the purposes of reproduction, mitosis
helps to produce two identical organisms of
the same genetic make up, clones.
Mitosis Interphase

Prophase

Metaphase

Anaphase

Telephase
Meiosis
• Gamates:Female sex cells called eggs, and the
male sex cells called sperm come together
during meiosis.
• This process produces cells with half the
usual number of chromosomes.
• You receive (half a set)23 chromosomes from
your mother and 23 from your father for a
total of 46. Making 23 pairs!!
• When chromosomes split they start as
Diploid(2 sets), halving into Haploid(half, 1
set), the # of chromosomes
Meiosis

Meiosis technically has

two PMAT Phases;
PMAT1, PMAT2, a repeat
of PMAT
The difference between
Mitosis and Meiosis:
• Mitosis is how your
toe nails are made(cell repair)
• Meiosis is how my folks made
ME! (sexual reproduction)
Scale
Interphase
• During Interphase each of the chromosomes
is copied.
• Chromosomes are threadlike coils (chromatin)
• The chromosomes then thicken and shorten in
size.
• The nuclear membrane disappears.
Prophase
• Meiosis begins (cell begins to divide)
• The chromatin continues to coil, making the
chromatin more and more compact.
• Centrioles (or poles) appear and begin to move
to opposite ends of cell.
• Spindle fibers between poles.
Metaphase
• Each chromosome is now made up of two
identical chromatids.
• Similar chromosomes pair up with each
other along the equator of the cell.
Anaphase
• Each chromatid divides, and new
chromosomes begin to move towards the
opposite poles and begins to move to the
opposite ends of the cell.
Telophase
• Two new nuclei are formed.
• Each daughter cell now has half the
number of chromosomes but each
chromosome consists of a pair of
chromatids.
• Mitosis ends and Meiosis continues to
form YOU!!!
