BREAKFAST

IN FINLAND
INTRODUCTION
The start of the day with a hearty meal
can have a different meaning
depending on where you wake up.

Have you ever thought about what

breakfast is made of in other countries
of the world?
REPUBLIC OF FINLAND
Finland, officially named the Republic of
Finland, is one of the northern countries in
Europe, along with Norway and Sweden. It is
the eighth country on the Old Continent in
terms of area, but has a small population of
only 5.4 millions. The relatively small number
of people makes it easy to preserve the
traditions and preserve the customs
established by their ancestors.
BREAKFAST IN FINLAND

A traditional breakfast
does not include fast food,
but sausages, cheeses,
fresh pastries and the
indispensable butter or
jam.
PURRO

A bowl of porridge made from

oats, called purro, is one of the
common breakfast options for
Finns. It is prepared from cereals,
milk, berries (fresh or frozen), a
little butter and sugar.
RYE BREAD
Another classic is rye bread. At
breakfast, Finns make rye sandwiches
which include butter, cheese and a
slice of sausages.
Vegetables are not mandatory, but
usually, they put a couple of pieces of
tomato or cucumber to make them
feel they are eating a well-balanced
meal.
KARELIAN PIE
Another morning favorite is the Karelian pie. This
traditional pastry has rye crust and thick rice
porridge inside.
It is the most common snack in Finland, sold round-
the-clock in shops and gas stations. Both adults and
children love it.
You can eat a Karelian pie as it is or with toppings.
The most common topping is egg-butter mash, but
you can find gourmet level Karelian pies with
smoked salmon or reindeer in cafés.
LOHIKEITTO

In restaurants and cafes you can

also order Lohikeitto, a creamy soup
made from salmon, very popular
among locals, but rarely cooked at
home. It can be consumed
throughout the day.
Drinks at Traditional Finnish Breakfast

Finns are the biggest consumers of coffee in the

world. They have a taste for a particular, soft,
round-flavored coffee.
Young, busy people opt for a smoothie with
Finnish berries, quark or natural yogurt, seasoned
with flax seeds and other nutritious little things.
Children usually have milk or hot chocolate in the
morning time.
CONCLUSION
Breakfast is important at any age, but especially for growing children is a sure way to
harmonious development.
Breakfast is one of the meals of the day, which provides energy after the night's rest. It is the
moment when the body wakes up and starts to set all the "engines" that have rested
overnight.
Breakfast is a very important meal - it can either make or break your day. About 15% of the
needs of a day must be covered by breakfast.

„Eat breakfast like a king,

lunch like a prince
and dinner like a poor man.”
