Session 2:
Cloud Computing
Agenda
-Cloud computing models
-Cloud computing for business
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & SYSTEMS

What is cloud computing?

IT service model where computing services (both hardware and
software) are delivered on demand to customers over a network
• Dynamically scalable
• Reliable
• Pay-for service
Where is the storage actually happening then? How does it reach the
customers?

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & SYSTEMS

Advantages of Cloud
Lowers the entry barrier for small businesses – storage and
application wise
Scalable at all times
Accommodate unanticipated spikes in needs
Low maintenance cost
Low cost for experts

Public cloud
A cloud environment used
by multiple organizations

Private cloud oud c and
A cloud environment

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & SYSTEMS

Community cloud
Controlled and shared across a group of organizations with common needs
Shared services
E.g., Multiple banks on a community cloud needing similar applications

Virtualization &
Multitenancy
Virtualization is technology that allows you to create multiple simulated environments or
dedicated resources from a single, physical hardware system.
Software called a hypervisor connects directly to that hardware and allows you to split
one system into separate, distinct, and secure environments known as virtual machines
(VMs).
Multitenancy allows multiple users (tenants) to work in the same software environment
at the same time at their own user interfaces (e.g., Most SaaS apps)

Players in the Cloud Industry

Providers
 Own and manage their own systems – deliver ‘cloud’ needs through cloud
services
Enablers
 Companies who facilitate the cloud client-provider partnership through
migration, monitoring, maintenance, etc
Consumers
 Corporate or individuals
Regulators
 Government or international bodies

Innovations using Cloud

MASHUP!

A mashup (computer industry jargon), in web development, is a web

page or web application that uses content from more than one source to
create a single new service displayed in a single graphical interface.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & SYSTEMS

Threats with Cloud

Privacy
Reliability – dependence on a third-party
Downtime issues – may not match with client downtime needs
Standardization issues
Regulation at local, national, global level
Trained individuals
Organizational culture
