RADICAL REACTION

KEY TERMS:

- Radical
- Chain reaction
- Initiation reaction/step
- Propagation reaction/step
- Termination reaction/step
What is radical reaction?

• is a process which occurs by a free radical mechanism

and results in the substitution of one or more of the
atoms or groups present in the substrate by different
atoms or groups.
Radical chain reaction have three distinct phases:

1. Initiation Reaction- increase in the number of radicals

2. Propagation Reaction- total number of radicals remains the same

3. Termination Reaction- reactions resulting in a net decrease in the number of radicals combine to form a more stable species
1. Initiation

A–B A+B

2. Propagation

A C–D A-C+D
D E - F D–E+F
3. Termination

F + G F-G
