Evaluation of the Mechanical Properties

of Reinforcing Steel Bars Collapsed

Buildings Sites within Legazpi City,
Albay

Deliva, Gamboa & Pecundo BSCE-3A

INTRODUCTION
MAIN POINTS COVERED
a. Why did you choose this topic?
Steel rebars play such an important and demanding function in
reinforced concrete structures that precise details on their properties are
crucial throughout the design phase. Mechanical property variations are
unavoidable in the steelmaking process.
INTRODUCTION
MAIN POINTS COVERED
b. Why is there a need for your research/topic to be studied?
The purpose of this study is to look at the mechanical properties of
reinforcing steel bars recovered from some of the collapsed construction
sites. By comparing our findings to numerous criteria, we will be able to
determine the contribution of this important building material to building
failure/collapse.
INTRODUCTION
MAIN POINTS COVERED
c. What are the overall benefits that may be derived from your study?
The study's findings will provide contractors, engineers, and building
owners with information on how steel rebar is compared to previous
work and some available standards in order to determine their likely role
in the ongoing building collapses.
OBJECTIVES
The major goal of the research is to see if there is a substantial change in
the mechanical properties of reinforcing steel bars obtained from three
separate collapsed building sites in Legazpi City, Albay. Specifically, the
researchers aim to answer the following:
OBJECTIVES
1) What are the mechanical properties of the samples of the reinforcing
steel bars obtained from three different collapsed building sites in
Legazpi City, Albay based on:

a. Yield stress
b. Ultimate tensile stress
c. Strain hardening ratio
OBJECTIVES
2) Which bars have a higher yield strength of the steel, ultimate tensile
stress, and strain hardening ratio?

3) Which reinforcing bars have a relatively high strength but low

ductility, making them vulnerable to brittle fracture and possibly
contributing to the collapse of the building structures?
