 Discuss Module 4.2 Integration Wiki
Are you familiar with these
equations?
What is integration?
 Integration is the process of reversing the process of
differentiation.
 The process of finding the antiderivative of a function is called
integration. We use the symbol

 In denoting the indefinite integral (simple integral) of the

function f(x) and the symbol dx means that we are integrating
with respect to its independent variable x.
 In this notation, we call f(x) the integrand.
What is integration?

 When given the integration problem, we are

actually looking for a function F(x) such that
F'(x)=f(x) or

Example 3:
 Ifthe integral is computed over an interval [a,b], then the
integral is now called definite integral denoted as

 We call the numbers a and b the limits of integration. If

F(x) is the integral of f(x) on [a,b], then the definite
integral is evaluated as

Properties of Definite Integral
Area Under a Curve
 Asan application of the definite integral, the area under
the curve given by f(x) on the interval [a,b] and bounded by
the x-axis is given by the definite integral of f(x).
