INFINITE HOTEL

PARADOX

NAME: VISHAL SINGH

UID:212270
ROLL NUMBER: 254
Consider a hypothetical hotel with a countably infinite number
of rooms, all of which are occupied.

First Thoughts:
1) No more accommodation available.
2) Applying the Pigeonhole principle on finite rooms will tell us that
no more rooms are available
• Suppose K new guests arrive to the hotel

Move every current guest in the nth room to (n+k)th room, which in turn will free up k rooms
for the new guests.

• Suppose countably Infinite guests arrive to the hotel

Move every guest in nth room to (2n)th room , meaning all even rooms will be occupied by
the current guests, freeing up all the odd numbered rooms for the all the new guests.
