PROPERTIES OF A WELL-

WRITTEN TEXT
1. Ideas - developed when you have a clear
statement of purpose, position, facts, examples,
specific details, definitions, explanation,
justifications, or opposing viewpoints in your
text.
2. Organization – achieved when your
ideas are logically and accurately
arranged
When your ideas are organized well, your text
can achieve the following:
• Unity – achieved when your composition
contains one focused idea
• Coherence – occurs when your ideas are
connected at the conceptual level
• Cohesion – when there is connection of ideas
at sentence level in your text
3. Language Use and Word Choice –
appropriateness of the words /
vocabulary you used in the text
YOU HAVE TO…
- Use clear and concise sentences and
precise vocabulary
- Avoid redundancies, wordiness, clichés,
and high falutin language.
- Avoid excessive use of there and it
structures.
- Be consistent with pronouns
- Avoid sexist language.
When your words and language are used
appropriately, Sentence Fluency is achieved.
Sentence Fluency - achieved when you use
appropriate sentence structure, correct subject-
verb agreement and varying sentence starters
4. Voice - distinct personality, style, or point
of view of a piece of writing or any other
creative work
5. Mechanics – set of conventions on how
to spell, abbreviate, punctuate, and
capitalize
YOU HAVE TO…
- Avoid contractions and
exclamation points (unless part of a
direct quotation)
- Mention the full name before the
abbreviation.
- Numbers from 0-10 must be spelled
out.
ARGUMENTS, CLAIMS &
EVIDENCE
An argument is a statement that
others are trying to convince you is
true in order to persuade you. The
argument contains two elements…
A claim is a conclusion that
someone is attempting to get you to
believe.
An evidence is the information used
to support the claim.
Examples:
1. Our new advertising campaign is ineffective (the claim)
because sales fell by 20% when the
new campaign was introduced (the evidence)
2. Our company’s new sexual harassment seminars are not
working (the claim) because reported sexual harassments are up
50% ever since the seminars began (the evidence).
3. Our company’s desire to buy its closest competitor is
misguided (the claim) because its price/earnings ratio (P/E) is 50
and well above the average P/E (the evidence).
