ARCHITECTURE

Introduction:-

 According to some historians the majority of buildings built before the mid 17 th
century are considered vernacular architecture
 Thus homes are earlier peoples building structures
 They are built by the peoples for the peoples.
 These vernacular architectures shows cultures , traditions , values and norms from
now up to that have been passed down through several generations.

A COTTAGE
Used to provide shelter in the ruler side of Ethiopia
Gurage village settlement KAYA

How it’s made?

 built by peoples for


the peoples
Structural part by using
zegba
(podocarpus gracilior),
Ted (juniperus procera)
now a days by bahir zaf
Space arrangement (eucalyptus)
 majorities have only one door
 for the sake of space use all have one
big pillar at the center
 at the edge of one quarter there
is a suspended floor called kot
 on the other edge there is cattle’s place
 near to the pilar there is a fire place mainly for the use of
heat

Unique structural and material approach
 most of these materials are handy made crafts
 the whole house gets stable by only one pillar structure
 each and every materials used in one house has it’s own
purpose
 for the floor they use a dung
 a clay soil is the main source to make materials and also
walls

Cultural or religious interpretation


 they mainly focus on cultural approach
 respecting the elders as well as the owner like by
making their own chair , tables , plates etc…
 some materials used for only special purposes
(i.e:- wedding , holidays ,funerals… etc)
