TOPIC : ATHLETICS - RUNNING EVENTS


Running Events
Short Distance Races Or Sprints
• 100 meter - 100-metre dash, is a sprint race in track
and field competitions. It’s a shortest running events in
athletics.

• 200 Meter - The 200 meters is a sprint running event.


On an outdoor race 400 m track, the race begins on the
curve and ends on the home straight.
• 400 Meter - 400-metre dash, is a sprinting event
in track and field competitions. On a standard
outdoor running track, it is one lap around the track.
Runners start in staggered positions and race in
separate lanes for the entire course.
Middle Distance Races

• 800 Meters - This consists of two rounds of


the 400 meter track.

• 1500 Meters - Also known as the metric mile,


the 1500m race requires athletes to run 3.75
times around the track.

• 3000 Meters - The 3000 meters  is a track


running event, in this event a athlete run 7.5
laps of 400 meter track.
Long Distance Races
• 3000 Meter Steeplechase – A steeplechase race is for a
distance of 3,000m. The course consists of 28 barriers
and 7 water jumps. A distance of 2,000m is also used for
races which has 18 barriers and 5 water jumps. Races are
conducted for both men and women, but the barriers used
for women are slightly smaller than that used for men.

• 5000 Meter – In 5000 meter running athlete run 12.5


rounds of 400 meter track.

• 10000 Meter - The longest track event in athletics


competition, in 10000 meter a athlete run 25 rounds of
400 meter track.
Others Races
• RELAY RACE

• 4 X 100 Meters
• The 4 × 100 meters
relay or sprint  relay is
an athletics track event run in
lanes over one lap of the track
with four runners completing
100 meters each.

• 4X400 Meters
• The 4 × 400 meters relay or
long relay is an athletics track
event in which teams consist of
four runners who each complete
400 meters.
Hurdle Races

• 100 Meters Hurdle


• 100-meter hurdles, is a track
and field event run mainly by
women For the race,
ten hurdles of a height of 83.8
centimeters (33.0 in) are placed
along a straight course of 100
meters (109.36 yd.)The first
hurdle is placed after a run-up
of 13 meters from the starting
line. The next 9 hurdles are set
at a distance of 8.5 meters
from each other, and the home
stretch from the last hurdle to
the finish line is 10.5 meters
long.
• 110 Meters Hurdle
• 110-meter hurdles, is a event for men.
As part of a racing event,
ten hurdles of 1.067 meters (3.5 ft. or
42 inches) in height are evenly placed
along a straight course of 110 meters. 

• 400 Meter Hurdle


• The 400 meters hurdles is a track and
field hurdling event. On a standard
outdoor track, 400 meters is the
length of the inside lane, once around
the stadium. Runners stay in their
lanes the entire way after starting out
of the blocks and must clear
ten hurdles that are evenly placed
around the track. 
Road Events
• MARATHON

• The marathon is a long-distance running


event, taking place over a course of
42.195km or (26 miles & 385 yds.) in length.

• RACE WALKING

• Race walking is a special long-distance race


event in which the participants must walk as
fast as they can.
• The men compete in both 20km and 50km
events, women only in the 20km event.
Heptathlon and Decathlon
Heptathlon
It is a track and field combined events contest made up of
seven events. The name derives from the Greek word hepta
means  (seven) and athlon, means "feat").

The heptathlon consists of the following events, with the first four
contested on the first day, and remaining three on day two:
Decathlon
The decathlon is a combined event in athletics consisting of
ten track and field events. The word "decathlon" was formed, in
analogy to the word "pentathlon ", from Greek (déka, meaning
"ten") and athlon, meaning "contest" or “prize”).

Women's decathlon
The Women's decathlons are divided into a two-day
competition, with the track and field events held in the order
below.
