GENERAL PHYSICS I

Talavera Senior High School

DARUIS A. SAMPAGA
Subject Teacher
Good afternoon.

Food for Thought
Life is like a compass.
When you set your goals
correctly, it will take you
to the right direction.
Let’s Recall
What is the difference
between scalar quantity and
vector quantity?
Let’s Recall
What is the symbol we use to
represent a vector?
Location of Eye/center
The center of Tropical Depression “OBET” was estimated based on all
available data at 920 km East of Extreme Northern Luzon (20.9 °N, 130.7 °E )
On September 22, 2022, the
center of Tropical Storm
“KARDING” was estimated at
1,320 km East of Northern
Luzon (17.9°N, 134.2°E)
GRAPHICAL
METHOD OF
VECTOR
ADDITION
Lesson Objectives
Define resultant vector.
Perform addition of vectors
using graphical method.
Appreciate graphical method
of finding the resultant vector.
Activity 1.
One Dimensional
Vector Addition
Resultant Vector
The sum of two or more
vectors. It is the result of
adding two or more vectors
together.
One dimensional vector addition
How to draw vectors in a Cartesian
Coordinate Plane?
A vector quantity is represented by an arrow. The
length of the arrow is proportional to the magnitude
of the vector. The tail indicates the starting point of
the vector. The orientation of the arrowhead shows the
direction.
The Graphical
Method of Vector
Addition
Tail-Head
Method
Tail-Head Method
1. Choose a scale and indicate it on a sheet of paper. A scale
should be fit on the sheet of paper. A vector is represented by
an arrow, the length of an arrow relates to its magnitude and
the arrowhead tells the direction.
2. Choose a starting location and draw the first vector to scale
in the indicated direction. Label the magnitude and direction
of the scale on the diagram (e.g., SCALE: 1 cm = 20 m).

3. Starting from where the head of the first vector ends, draw
the second vector to scale in the indicated direction. Label the
magnitude and direction of this vector on the diagram.
Tail-Head Method
4. Draw the resultant from the tail of the first vector
to the head of the last vector. Label this vector as
Resultant or simply R.

5. Using a ruler, measure the length of the resultant

and determine its magnitude by converting to real
units using the scale
Example
d1=90 km, East
d2=50 km, North
Parallelogram
Method
Parallelogram Method
Parallelogram method is a
method for finding sum or
resultant of two vectors.
Parallelogram Method
1. Select a scale and accurately draw the vector to scale in the
indicated direction.
2.Starting from the origin of Cartesian Coordinate Plane draw the
two vectors. Then sketch horizontal and vertical broken lines at
the head of the vector. The sketched lines will meet to form a
rectangle (a special case of a parallelogram).
3. Measure the length of the sides of the parallelogram. Use the
scale to convert it in real units. Label the magnitude on the
diagram.
4.Use a protractor to determine the direction of the resultant
vector. The angle should be measured counterclockwise from
the positive X-axis.

Draw Me!
1.A speed boat is moving west at a speed of 24 km/h.
The river is flowing towards north at a speed of 6
km/h. Find the resultant velocity and direction of the
speed boat.( use Tail-head Method)
2. Harry Potter went for a walk one day. He walked
South 6.0 km and then west 10 km. Determine the
total displacement and the direction of the entire trip
by Harry. ( use Parallelogram Method )
Answers:
Tail-Head Method
25km/h, 760 North of West

Parallelogram Method
12 km, 310 South of West
Gino walks 600 m
East, then turns 400 m
North and finally walks
300 m West. Find his
resultant displacement.
Polygon
Method
Polygon Method
This is used to find the
resultant of three or more
vectors
Polygon Method
Gino walks 600 m East, then turns 400 m North and
finally walks 300 m West. Find his resultant
displacement.
Thoughts to Ponder
Why do captain of the ships and
navigators use compass to reach their
destination?
How important are our skills in finding the resultant
vector in understanding weather forecast like this?
Thoughts to Ponder
What is the
importance of having
direction in life?
Guide Questions
What are the graphical methods of
adding vectors?
How do we get the resultant vector
using Tail-head method?
How do we get the resultant vector
using parallelogram method?
Evaluation
True or False
1.Resultant vector is the sum of two or more vectors
2.Parallelogram method is where the head of the first
vector ends, the tail of the second vector begins.
3.To use the parallelogram method, we draw the vectors
so that their initial points meet. Then, we draw in lines
to form a parallelogram.
4.The resultant vector in the tail-head method is the
diagonal from the initial point to the opposite vertex of
the parallelogram.
Problem Solving ( 6pts)
Use the tail-head method.
Hermione Granger walks home from school 300 m
East and remembers that she has to bring home her
Potion Making book which a classmate borrowed. She
walks another 500 m North to her Classmate’s house.
Determine her resultant displacement.
