GENERAL PHYSICS

WORK
GROUP I
WORK
• It is the energy transferred to or from an objects via the
application of force (f) along the displacement (d).

• A force must be exerted and there must be motion or

displacement in the direction of the force.

• In physics, a force without motion or displacement there’s

no work done.
HOW TO SOLVE FOR
WORK? F d
• The work accomplished by the force
is the product of the magnitude of the
force multiplied by its displacement
W = Fd
• Sometimes force and displacement
may not be parallel to each other
F
• SI unit = joule ( J )
Ø
d

W = Fdcosø
SAMPLE PROBLEM
Liza is out with her friends. Misfortune occurs and Liza with her friends find
themselves pushing a car. Using there cumulative force 1080N, they pushed the
car 218m to the fuel station. Determine the work done on the car.

F = 1080N
GIVEN: F = 1080N FIND: Work
D = 218M
SOLUTION: W = Fd
W = (1080N) (218m)
W = 235,440Nm
d = 218m
or
235,440 J
SAMPLE PROBLEM
A force of 100N was necessary to lift a box. A total of 150J of work was done.
How far was the box lifted?

GIVEN: W = 150J FIND: Distance

F =100N

SOLUTION: d = W/F
d = 150J / 100N
d = 1.5m
SAMPLE PROBLEM
A person pulls a block 2m along a horizontal surface by a constant force F =
20N. Determine the work done by the force acting on the block

GIVEN: F = 20N FIND: Work

D =2M

SOLUTION: W = Fd
W = (20N) (2m)
W = 40J
SAMPLE PROBLEM
It took 50 joules to push a cabinet 5 meters across the floor. With what force
was the cabinet pushed?

GIVEN: F = 20N FIND: Force

D =2M

SOLUTION: F = W/d
F = 50J / 5m
F = 10N
