WHAT IS TOURISM?

• According to the UNWTO tourism is a social, cultural and economic

phenomenon which entails the movement of people to countries or places
outside their usual environment for personal or business/professional
purposes.
THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF TOURISM IMPACTS

• Tourism brings both positive and negative impacts on tourist destinations.

The traditionally-described domains of tourism impacts are Environmental,
Economic and Social impacts. These impacts are analysed using data
gathered by businesses, governments, and industry organizations.
WHAT ARE ECONOMICAL DEVELOPMENT?

• Economic Development is programs, policies or activities that seek to

improve the economic well-being and quality of life for a community.
WHAT ARE SOCIAL DEVELOPMENTS?

• Social development is about improving the well-being of every individual in

society so they can reach their full potential.
WHAT ARE ENVIRONMENTAL DEVELOPMENT

• Environmental development involves all positive changes brought about in a

particular geographical area through people-centered political, economic,
social, cultural and even diplomatic efforts for a better place for all live.
WHAT ARE THE ECONOMICAL IMPACTS:

• The economic effects of tourism include improved tax revenue and personal income,

increased standards of living, and more employment opportunities. According to the
2019 edition of the UNWTO International Tourism Highlights report, international tourist
arrivals reached 1.4 billion, a 5% increase in 2018
• Tourism is a major source of foreign exchange for the economy and a potentially powerful
means of reducing poverty. In fact, together with remittances, tourism is the largest source of
foreign exchange: in 2016, earnings from tourism and remittances each represented about
15% of gross domestic product (GDP)The most important economic feature of activities
related to the tourism sector is that they contribute to three high-priority goals of developing
countries: the generation of income, employment, and foreign-exchange earnings. In this
respect, the tourism sector can play an important role as a driving force of economic
development.
WHAT ARE THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS

Tourism relies on, and greatly impacts, the natural environment in which it operates. In many
cases, the environment is an essential resource that outdoor recreation and ecotourism cannot
exist without. Even though many areas of the world are conserved in the form of parks and
protected areas, tourism development can still have severe negative impacts from misuse,
overuse, and neglect. According to UNEP these can include:
• Depletion of natural resources (water, forests, etc.)
• Pollution (air pollution, noise, sewage, waste and littering)
• Physical impacts (construction activities, marina development, trampling, loss of
biodiversity)
The environmental impacts of tourism knows no boundaries and can reach outside local areas
and have detrimental effects on the global ecosystem. Air travel for instance, is a major
WHAT ARE THE SOCIAL IMPACTS

• Sociocultural impacts are associated with interactions between people with differing cultural backgrounds,
attitudes and behaviors, etc. Because tourism experiences also involve human interaction, certain impacts may
occur. Generally, social impacts in tourism are related to guest-to-host or host-to-guest influences and changes.
Studies of these encounters often relate to the Social Exchange Theory, which describe how tourists and hosts’
behaviours change as a result of the perceived benefits and threats they create during interaction.
• Positive social impacts in tourism include learning about different cultures, increasing tolerance and inclusion
through LGBTQ+ travel, increasing amenities (e.g., parks, recreation facilities), investment in arts and culture,
celebration of Indigenous peoples, and community pride. When developed conscientiously, tourism can, and
does, contribute to a positive quality of life for residents and a deeper learning and appreciation for tourists.
