Composite Material

Definition:
• A material made from two or more constituent materials
• Significantly different physical or chemical properties
• When combined produce a material with characteristics different from the
individual components

Composite materials examples:


• Mud blocks
• Reinforced concrete and masonry
• Composite wood such as Ply wood
• Reinforced plastics such as fiber reinforced polymer or fiber glass

• Aluminum composite panels [ACP] – consisting of thin coil-coated
aluminum sheets bonded to a non aluminum used for external cladding of
buildings/insulation
• Plywood
– Composed of individual plies
– The grain of each ply is positioned at ninety degrees to the pieces of
ply above and below it
• Military
– Bullet proof vests
– Protective helmets
– Ballistic protection devices
