UNIT -1 Fundamentals of measurement and instrumentation

 What is measurement?
 The measurement of the given parameter or quantity is the result of the
comparison between predefined standard and unknown quantity to be measured.
 The measurement can be defined as the process to convert the physical
parameters into meaningful numbers.

 Question: Till date in lab which electrical parameters you have measured??
UNIT -1 Fundamentals of measurement and instrumentation

 Advantages of measurement:
 1. Non electrical signal can be converted into corresponding electrical signal.
 2. Electrical measured signal can be amplified ,filtered, multiplexed and sampled.
 3. Electrical measured signal can be easily converted into digital form for
display, recording and automatic analysis.
 4. Electrical measured signal can be transmitted over long distance with the help
of cables.
 5.Electrical measurement can be done with higher sensitivity, higher reliability
and low power consumption.
UNIT -1 Fundamentals of measurement and instrumentation

 Aims of measurement :-
 1. To monitor operation or process of the system using an instrument.
 2. To express the parameters, quantities or variables of the system in terms of
meaningful numbers.
 3. To obtain depth knowledge of the process and parameters which is very useful
for further modifications.
 4. To develop new advanced and automatic system.
 5. To detect the fault and defect in the system.
 6. For R & D.
UNIT -1 Fundamentals of measurement and instrumentation

Topic 1.1 Methods of measurements

 Methods of measurements
 1. Direct method :
 The unknown quantity is directly compared against a standard.
 It is quite common and accurate method.. Example: Length,Mass, time

Can you give other example?

 2.Indirect method:
 The unknown quantity is not measured directly but other parameters related to the
quantity are measured.
 It is inaccurate ,impractical and time consuming.
 Example: Electrical power by V-I method
UNIT -1 Fundamentals of measurement and instrumentation

 Role of instrument in measuring system OR Functions of instruments and

measurement system
 1. Indicating function Example: Analog meter
 2.Recording function Example: X-Y recorder, Strip chart recorder
 3.Controlling function Example: Thermostat for temperature
 4.Registering function Example: Energy meter
 5.Signaling function Example: Water level indicator
 6.Mathematical manipulation Example: Addition ,subtraction of quantities
UNIT -1 Fundamentals of measurement and instrumentation
