Philippine English is any variety of
English native to the Philippines,
including those used by the media and
the vast majority of educated Filipinos
and English learners in the Philippines
from adjacent Asian countries.

PHILIPPINE
ENGLISH
A national variety called Philippine
English evolved as a result of the
American colonization. Its origins as
an English language spoken by a large
segment of the Philippine population
can be traced to the American
introduction of public education,
taught in English medium of
instruction. 3
• The first official statements regarding the
institution of English in the Philippines
came from the Schurman Commission and
later in the same year from the Taft
Commission.
• By January 1901, Act 74 was passed
wherein the act provided English as the
basis of instruction in all public schools
and this policy remained unchanged until
the 1970s.

YAYA ENGLISH
• The features of yaya English are actually
typical of standard Philippine English.
Examples:
Double deck
Comfort room
Advance
Commute
Computer shop
course

BARGIRL ENGLISH
• It has the same characteristics as yaya
English with the addition of the use of “you
know” and non- Filipino idiomatic
expressions.
• “service of the servicemen”
• These bargirls are with little or no
education, taken from their poor families,
often with a promise of education, their
exposure to English is minimal.

COLEGIALA ENGLISH
• “the base language”
• Is an English but the syntax is
characteristically Tagalog.
• Colegiala English are frequent insertion of
common tagalog function words.
• The use of tagalog content words and
tagalog exclamatives
• It belongs to the higher socio-economic
class associated with educated English.

1. Barangay- basic unit of
administration.
2. Carinderia- small food stall with
some seating space.
3. Habal-habal – motorcycle taxi
4. Rotunda- traffic circle
5. Halo-halo- filipino dessert

 Different variations of English words
1. Chancing- the concept of “making a move” in the sexual context is
called panananching or “chancing”.
2. Eat-all-you-can – it is the version of all-you-can-eat buffet which offers
unlimited food and drinks at a fixed time or price.
3. Bedspace- not limited to the space in a bed, the term began to mean an
entire room in general that people can rent for use, and are eventually
called “bedspacers”.
4. Videoke- is the outcome after combining karaoke with video and was
first introduced in the country in the 1990s.
5. Balimbing- political turncoat or someone disloyal to his party, company
or group.
