AGMARK
BIS – BUREAU OF INDIAN
STANDARD
◦ BIS is a national standard body of India established by Bureau Indian Standard Act 1986 which
came inti effect on 23 december 1986 .BIS headquaters are in Manek Bhawan , Old delhi .
◦ BIS is responsible for the harmonious development of the activities such as standardization ,
marking and quality certification of goods . By these , it is benefiting the national economy by
providing safe , reliable and quality goods , minimizing health hazards to consumers , protecting
the environment , promotion of exports and imports substitues etc…
◦ Recently , BIS has worked towards addressing various national priorities and other government
initiatives like Swacch Bharat Abhiyan , Digital India, Make in India , through its activities of
standardization and certification .
ISI – INDIAN STANDARDS
INSTITUTION
◦ We have all heard of products proudly proclaiming their ISI mark. ISI stands for the Indian
Standards Institute, a body set up when India gained Independence to create standards needed
for orderly commercial growth and maintaining quality in industrial production.
◦ BIS is authorised by a legislation of 1986 tISI – INDIAN STANDARDS INSTITUTIOo offer
product certification. This certification programme is basically voluntary. Any manufacturer
who feels confident enough that his product has the ability to meet the BIS standard can apply
for product certification in two ways:
◦ While product certification is otherwise voluntary, there is, however, a list of items which for
reasons of public health, safety or mass nature of consumption are mandatorily certified by
BIS. These include gas valves and cylinders and infant food. Manufacturers of such products
can’t apply for ISI mark under the voluntary scheme.
AGMARK
◦ Agmark-Agricultural sector plays a very important role in Indian economy. To
effectively market the agriculture products in international market and in
domestic markets in India standard for agricultural produce & products were
required.
◦ Government of India through its agency Directorate of Marketing and Inspection
(DMI) lays down standards for agricultural products which is implemented at
State level. The quality certification for the agriculture produce which assures that
the products conforms to the standards laid down by the Government of India is
called Agmark Certification. 
◦ Thus, Agmark is a quality certification for agricultural products provided by the
Government of India which assures that the product containing the Agmark is
good in terms of quality and produced in hygienic condition thereby fit for human
consumption. It is useful both for consumers and producers, marketers and
traders.
