Reproduction in Plants
and Animals
Learning Objectives
I should be able to:
1. discuss the meaning and types of
reproduction
2. discuss how plants and animals
reproduce.
What is reproduction?
• Reproduction is when organisms produce
new living things( offsprings).
• There are two types of reproduction in
plants and animals, namely:
Asexual Reproduction
• The simplest animals reproduce asexually.
• Only one parent is needed
• All offspring are identical to the parent.
• Their body grows and eventually divides to
form two new organisms from the
original one. Example: An amoeba
Plants reproduce asexually by the methods of:
● vegetative propagation – the use of
the parts of plants,
● spore formation e.g. fungi (Mucor)
Sexual Reproduction
• Most animals reproduce by making sex cells called
eggs (ovum made by females) and sperm (made by
males).
• Each contain half the information needed to make a
new individual. Therefore, the egg and sperm must
join together to make a new organism (zygote), this
is known as fertilisation.
• Plants reproduce sexually by seeds.
