1. Magnets
Introduction video
Magnets attract magnetic materials

● There is a magnetic force that pulls

on a piece of steel when a magnet
attracts it.
The ends of a magnet is called the magnetic
poles
How magnets work
Hanging a magnet freely

The north pole

will point North.

The south pole

will point South.
Magnetic field lines
Always moves from N - S
Questions
Answer questions 1 and 2 from the
coursebook in your notebook
2. Magnet Rules
Magnet Rules

1. Like poles REPEL

2. Unlike poles ATTRACT
1. Like poles REPEL
2. Unlike poles ATTRACT

In these rules, ‘like poles’ means both poles are the

same (both north poles or both south poles).

‘Unlike poles’ means one north pole and one south

pole.

Sometimes people simply remember the phrase

‘opposites attract’.
3. Making a magnet
Making a magnet
We can use a permanent magnet to magnetise
a piece of Iron or steel (any magnetic
material).
How to magnetise a piece of iron or steel:

1. Lay the piece of iron or steel on the bench.

2. Using one pole of the magnet, stroke it gently from one
end to the other.
3. Stroke it several times, using the same pole.
4. Make sure you always stroke it in the same direction.

North.
● The south pole of a magnet will turn to point
South.
● Like poles repel, unlike poles attract.
● Magnetic materials can be magnetised by
stroking it with a magnet.
