Linear Model of Communication

Message &
Channel

Sender Receiver

• Describes communication as a linear one way process.

• Sender intentionally transmits a message to the receiver
• Focuses on the sender and the message within a
communication encounter
• Receiver is included only as the target or the end point –
not a part of the ongoing communication process

The Interactive Model of Communication

• Participants alternate positions as sender and receiver

and generate meaning by sending messages and
receiving feedback, within physical and psychological
contexts.
• Incorporates the feedback loop, which makes
communication a more interactive and a two-way
process. The alternation of roles between the sender and
receiver keeps the communication encounter going.
• The physical context and the psychological context of the
communication encounter happens influences
the communication process.

Transaction Model of Communication

• Describes communication as a process in which communicators generate

social realities within social, relational and cultural contexts
• We communicate to create relationship, form inter-cultural alliances,
shape our self concept, engage with others in dialogue to create
communities
• The contexts – physical, psychological, social, cultural and relational – all
these enhance or impede the communication process
