MATERIALS USED

FOR RELATED
LITERATURE AND
STUDIES
Reviewing related literature is library work.
Secondary data abound in libraries for your use
in your thesis writing.

So that you may not get lost in the library

researching for related literature to your study,
you have to be familiar with the materials or
sources of fata needed for this particular
purpose.
The library has a designated section for
unestablished materials. These unpublished
materials include theses and dissertation of
previous researches which they wrote sometime
in the past. They may be undergraduate,
students, masteral students or even doctorial
students of different colleges and universities.
The library has compilations of their work.
The library, too, may have so called
“Dissertation Abstracts International”. These
compilations of theses abstracts/summaries that
have gathered from all over the world and
bound together to become volumes. This is also
a rich source of related literature.
Finally, the library is also rich in other materials
as newspapers, magazines, journals, brochures
and other literature. Articles about your topic
and research title abound from these sources
and library materials. Make sure to refer to such
sources dated within the last five years for the
purpose of updates and relevance.
What is Thesis Abstract?
A thesis abstract is a summary of the thesis, It is
often at the beginning of the book-bound thesis.
The first few pages of a thesis are utilized for its
abstract so that the readers may spend their
time more leisurely reviewing such a research
work. Therefore, you might as well concentrate
on the thesis abstracts for purposes of related
studies.
A thesis abstract contains the statement of problem
and hypothesis, the research design including research
method used, research setting, population, sample,
sampling procedure, instrumentation, data gathering and
treatment of data plus a summary of the highlights of the
findings and the conclusions and recommendations of the
study.
In the case of using “Dissertation Abstract
International,” the whole thing found on a page
may be copied since they are already
summaries of abstracts. This is a more
convenient way of enriching your review of
related studies.
WHAT DATA MUST BE COPIED FROM A
THESIS ABSTRACT?
The first group of data which must be copied
from a thesis abstract includes the title of the
thesis, the name of the author and his school,
and the date when it was written. These data
are very important to give recognition to the
research work that will either support or
contradict the findings of your present study.
Next in importance is copying the statement of
problem and hypothesis of the previous research study. In
case where only one or more of the variables studied arc
related to the present study, they must be underscored in
preparing your reprt.
