Definition and Importance of

related Literature and Studies


Related literature is composed of discussion of facts
and principles to which the present study is related.

The materials are usually printed and found in books,


encyclopedias, professional journals, magazines,
newspapers and other publications.
Importance, Purpose and Functions
of Related literature and Studies
Reviewed literature and studies help or guide the
researchers in the following ways:
1. Help or guide the researchers in searching for or
selecting a better research problem or topic.

2. Help the researcher understand his topic research


better.
3. Ensure that there will be no duplication of
other studies.

4. Help and guide the researcher in locating more


sources of related information.

5. Help and guide the researcher in making his


research especially in:
5.1 The formulation of specific questions to be researched on;

5.2 The formulation of assumptions and hypothesis if there


should be any;

5.3 The formulation of conceptual framework;

5.4 The selection and application of the methods of research;

5.5 The selection and application of sampling technique;


5.6 The selection and/or preparation and validation of
research instruments for gathering data;

5.7 The selection and application of statistical procedures;

5.8 The analysis, organization, presentation and


interpretation of data;

5.9 The making of summary of findings, conclusions, and


recommendations,
6. Help and guide the researcher in making
comparison between his findings with the
findings of other researchers on similar studies
with the end in view of formulating
generalizations or principles which are the
contributions of the study to the fund of
knowledge.
Characteristics of Related Literature
1. The surveyed materials must be as recent as possible

Exceptions:
a. Treatises that deal on universals or things or more or less permanent
nature may still be good today.
b. When a comparison or contrast is to be made between the conditions
of today and those of a remote past, say ten or twenty years ago.

2. Materials reviewed must be objective and unbiased.


3. Materials reviewed must be relevant to the study

4. Surveyed materials must have been based upon


genuinely, original and true facts or data to make valid
and reliable

5. Reviewed materials must not be too few or too


many.
