Biosecurity Classification of Swine

Farms
AFRICAN SWINE FEVER (ASF)

African Swine Fever Virus

No Treatment

No Vaccine

Highly Contagious

Highly Fatal

Not a human health threat

Clinical Signs of ASF

Haemorrhages

Fever

Lethargy

Diarrhea
ASF SURVIVAL TIME
Definition and Importance

• BIOSECURITY
– BIO- life/buhay
– SECURITY- seguridad/kaligtasan sa panganib
– A set of measures designed to reduce the risk of introduction,
establishment and spread of diseases, infections and
infestations from environment and other pigs.
– has a direct effects to health and productivity of pigs
Common Tools/Equipments
• Good quality farm boots • Detergent
• Clean farm clothes • Disinfectant (approved for ASFV)
• Disposable biosecurity • Scrubbing brushes
suits • Garbage bags
• Disposable Gloves (make (including biohazard bags)
sure they are the right size) • Ziplock bags (for transporting
• Plastic mat phones or other equipment)
• Buckets • Water
• Disinfectant sprayer
Why is there a need to asses the Biosecurity of each farm?

1. To ensure prevention of animal diseases to infect farm such

as ASF
2. To continue hog raising in their areas. Only those farms with
Biosecurity level 1 are given the permit to carry on in swine
raising
3. To eligible as recipient of agriculture- related projects of the
government
4. To be excluded in mandatory stamping out during disease
outbreak
Areas of Biosecurity Concern

• Location- e.g. other pig farms located away from

livestock facilities, slaughterhouses, meat markets has
better chance of disease entry prevention
• Perimeter- fences, warning signage's, locked doors
• Entrance- no entry of non essential people, minimum
downtime for incoming people, separate change area,
showering requirement, clothing and boots provided
Areas of Biosecurity Concern

• Buildings- bird-proof, rodent and fly control, no stray

animals
• Shipping- empty and clean vehicles only, no truck/ trailer
from contaminated barn, cleaning and disinfection of
owned trucks
• New stock- replacements` stocks health status, isolation
of incoming stock, diagnostic tests on new animals
Areas of Biosecurity Concern

• Feed and water- chlorinated water , regular testing

(once a year
• Dead stock- secured disposal, not less than 1m below
the ground(starting from the carcass/ pile of carcass)
• Manure Removal- secured storage and removal
– Proper waste storage= septic tank
– Re- use as Energy source e.g Biogas
– Re-use as fertilizer

• Disinfection and vaccination program

Areas of Biosecurity Concern

Disinfection and Vaccination program

– Disinfection- cleaning – E. coli
(daily)- disinfection (at – Hog cholera
least 3x/wk) – APP
– FMD
Note: – Mycoplasma
– Proper use of disinfectant – Atropic rhinitis
Classification of Biosecurity
LOCATION
Distance from the nearest pig farm

• > 500 meter from facilities

Animal facilities
• 1 km away from the main
road.
• > 2km ideal for to prevent
Slaughter Meat
more diseases than ASF houses markets
