What is Period of New Society?
The period of the New Society started on
September 21, 1972. The Carlos Palanca
Awards continued to give annual awards.
Almost all themes in most writings dealt with
the development or progress of the country –
like the Green Revolution, family planning,
proper nutrition, environment, drug addiction
and pollution.
Green Revolution
The Green Revolution was a period when the productivity of
global agriculture increased drastically as a result of new
advances. During this time period, new chemical fertilizers and
synthetic herbicides and pesticides were created.

Family Planning
POPCOM defines Family Planning as a program that enables
parents to deliberately and responsibly decide the number and
spacing of their children, by avoiding for the time being, or
even for an indefinite period, a birth.
Proper Nutrition
Good nutrition is essential for a healthy body that’s able to
fight off infections and function properly, but many
individuals forego healthy eating for a variety of HY reasons,
including lack of knowledge, hectic schedules and exhaustion.

Environment
Environment can be defined as a sum total of all the living and
non-living elements and their effects that influence human
life. While all living or biotic elements are animals, plants,
forests, fisheries, and birds, non-living or abiotic elements
include water, land, sunlight, rocks, and air.
Drug Addiction
The drug issue is undoubtedly a public health challenge
that must be prioritized because it creates complex health
and social problems.

Pollution
Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the
natural environment that cause adverse change. Pollution
can take the form of any substance (solid, liquid, or gas) or
energy (such as radioactivity, heat, sound, or light).
What is the aim of New Society?
The New Society tried to stop pornography or
those writings giving bad influences on the
morals of the people. All school newspapers were
temporarily stopped and so with school
organizations. The military government
established a new office called the Ministry of
Public Affairs that supervised the newspapers,
books and other publications.
Period of New Society
The government took part in reviving old plays like the
Cenaculo, the Zarzuela and the Embayoka of the
Muslims. The Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Folk
Arts Theater and even the old Metropolitan Theater were
rebuilt in order to have a place for these plays. Singing
both Filipino and English songs received fresh incentives.
Those sent abroad promoted many Filipino songs. The
weekly publications like KISLAP, and LIWAYWAY helped a
lot in the development of literature. These became
outlets for our writers to publish many of their works.
Cenaculo
The Senakulo is a traditional Filipino Lenten play that depicts
events from the Old and New Testaments related to life,
sufferings and death of Jesus Christ in a theatrical setting
performed by the members of the community. “Cenaculo” (or
cenacle) is derived from Spanish and describes the place where
Jesus and his disciples celebrated the Last Supper. The play
began along the outskirts of Pasay in 1902 and is roughly
based on Filipino Gaspar Aquino de Belen's poem “Pasyon,”
which he wrote in 1703. The Malibay cenaculo is a Passion
play on the life of Christ and is one of the longest running of
its kind in the Philippines
Zarzuela
Zarzuela originated in Spain in the 17th century but reached its
definitive form in the 19th century as a mixture of instrumental
music, singing, dancing and the spoken word that encompassed
the rhythms and traditions of the diverse cultures of Spain.
Zarzuela, often defined as Spanish opera, is a theatrical play that
contains musical acts. Characters usually represent the working
classes: chulos (men wearing peculiar clothes and making
extravagant gestures), ratas (thieves), nannies, policemen. There
are two main forms of zarzuela: Baroque zarzuela (c. 1630–1750),
the earliest style, and Romantic zarzuela (c. 1850–1950).
Embayoka
Embayoka is a rhyming play similar to the Tagalog
Balagtasan that includes dance and song. Embayoka of
the Muslims which were presented in the rebuilt
Metropolitan Theater, the Folk Arts. Theater and the
Cultural Center of the Philippines. The Mindanao State
University presented a play Sining Embayoka at the
Culture Center of the Philippines
