ANGLES

What is Angle?
In geometry, an angle can be defined as the figure formed by two rays meeting
at a common end point. An angle is represented by the symbol ∠. Angles are
measured in degrees using a protractor.

● Interior angle is an angle
inside a shape.
● Exterior angle is an angle
located between any side of
the shape and a line
extended from the next side.

angles on the outer side of each of those two lines but
on opposite sides of the transversal and Interior

QUESTIONS
ABOUT
ANGLES
Let x be one of the angles.
Solution: Then the other angle is 2x.

Question 1 Because x and 2x are

complementary angles, we
Problem: have

Two angles are x + 2x = 90°

complementary. If one of the
angles is double the other 3x = 90
angle, find the two angles. Divide each side by 3.
x = 30
And,
2x = 2(30) = 60
So, the two angles are 30°
and 60°.
Let x be the measure of a
Solution: complementary angle required.

Question 2 Given: The measure of an angle is

3/4 of 60°.

Problem: Then, 3/4 ⋅ 60° = 45°

The measure of an angle is

Because x and 45° are
3/4 of 60°. What is the
complementary angles, we have
measure of the
complementary angle ?
x + 45 = 90

Subtract 45° from each side.

x = 45

So, the measure of the

complementary angle is 45°
Solution:
Let x be the first angle.

Then, the second angle = 3(x + 3)

The third angle = 2x + 3

Question 3 We know that, the sum of the

three angles of a triangle = 180°

Problem: x + 3(x + 3) + 2x + 3 = 180°

In a triangle, if the second x + 3x + 9 + 2x + 3 = 180°

angle is 3 times the sum of
6x + 12 = 180°
the first angle and 3 and the
third angle is the sum of 2 6x = 168°
times the first angle and 3,
find the three angles of the x = 28°
triangle. The first angle = 28°

The second angle = 3(28 + 3) = 93°

The third angle = 2 ⋅ 28 + 3 = 59°

So, the three angles of a triangle

are 28°, 93° and 59°.

We know that, the sum of the
Solution: three angles of a triangle = 180°

Question 4 90 + (x + 1) + (2x + 5) = 180°

3x + 6 = 90°
Problem:
3x = 84°
In a right triangle, apart from
the right angle, the other two
x = 28°
angles are x + 1 and 2x + 5.
find the angles of the
triangle. So, we have

x + 1 = 28 + 1 = 29°

2x + 5 = 2 ⋅ 28 + 5 = 56 + 5 =
61°

So, the three angles of a triangle

are 90°, 29° and 61°.
Divide each side by 5.

x = 2y ----(2)

Question 5 Substitute 2y for x in (1).

2y + y = 180

Problem: 3y = 180
Two angles are
supplementary. If 5 times of Divide each side by 3.
one angle is 10 times of the
other angle. Find the two y = 60
angles.
Substitute 60 for y in (2).
Solution:
Let x and y be the two angles which are x = 2(60)
supplementary. Then, x + y = 180 -----(1)
x = 120
Given : 5 times of one angle is 10 times of
the other angle. Then, 5x = 10y So, the two angles are 60° and 120°.
