What is automatic processor ?

• Automatic processor is an equipment

used to process radiograph
automatically
Features of an automatic processor

Mechanical Replenishment
Transport of chemicals

Temperature Water circulation

control system

Drying system
Processing cycles

• “Processing cycles” refers to the period during

which one film passes through processor
• Also known as dry to-dry cycles
• Some machines have a built-in speed regulator
Production capacity
• Numbers of films which a processor is able to
accept in one hour
• Larger processor usually accept 250 sheets of
35*43 cm size per hour
• A small machine might run at about one third of
the larger processor
• An intermediate capacity might be able to accept
175*35*43 cm films per hour
Film speed time

The film speed for a

• Large processor is 158cm per min
• Medium processor is 100cm per
min
• Small processor is 50cm per min
Film transport system

In an automatic processor, a film is

moved by means of a system of rollers
either by
a) Vertically through a series of deep
tanks
b) Horizontally through a series of
shallow tanks
Vertically through a series of deep tanks
Horizontally through a series of shallow
tanks
Motor drive
Activates and deactivates automatically
by the passage of a film
It is energized by an electronic sensor
It is automatically switch to a standby
condition as soon as it detects no other in
its train
Measuring the replenishing rate

• The steps to measure the replenishing rate are

a. Identification of the developer and fixer supply
lines
b. Unhooking the pipes from the tanks and hold it
over a calibrated beaker(measuring glass)
c. Knowing the ideal level of the developer and
fixer in the reservoirs
Replenishment of solution

• Regular addition of fresh solution

is very essential
• Replenishment rate
Optimum replenishment rate
The rational which helps determine
optimum replenishment rates is
i. 1mm sq films needs 500ml of developer
ii. 1mm sq films need a 900ml of fixer
• Correct replenishment rate may be calculated
as
R.Rate = film length(m)*film width(m)*replenish r
volume(ml)/m sq
Recirculation of solution
The purpose of recirculation of solutions are
a. To afford better thermal control
b. To obtain more even flow and distributions of
the solution
c. To maintain solution activity
d. To increase agitation of the solution ensures
removal of any accumulated particles
Temperature control

• Automatic processor acquire accurate methods

of temperature control
• Immersion heater place at the base of processing
tanks is suitable to raise the temperature of the
developer

Conclusion
• Automatic processor has an
advantage over manual method
• It is standardized and consistent
• It produces radiograph faster
• It is also more safe for the working
staff
