RILA MONASTERY

Geography

The Rila Monastery, located in


southwestern Bulgaria, in the
upper reaches of the Rila River. It
is located near the village of
Pastra, not far from the place of its
original construction.
History
This is the largest monastery in
Bulgaria - 5 floors, 4 of which are
visible. The museum is located on the
ground floor.
Since its founding, the monastery has
become a literary and educational
center.
Neofit Rilski developed a great
pedagogical activity in it, who during
the revival founded a cell school here.
The monastery gave shelter to Vasil
Levski, Gotse Delchev, Peyo Yavorov.
Cultural monument
In 1961 the monastery was
declared a National Museum, and
since 1983 it has been under the
protection of UNESCO.
Manuscripts, old printed books
are kept in the Rila Monastery,
and many antiques are in the
museum.
Tourism

The Rila Monastery is among the


Hundred National Tourist Sites in
Bulgaria.
The place is beautiful and full of
history. You can visit it every season,
because the view is worth it.
