What is biometrics?

What is the purpose of biometrics?

Types of biometrics.

Advantages and disadvantages of
each biometric type.
Using unique physical features like
fingerprints to identify people is
called  biometrics.

Many countries use biometric data

on passports, at airports, law
enforcement, mobile access,
banking, homes, schools and
office access.
Security system like those used in
airports need to be fast, reliable and
economical.

Fingerprints are most commonly

used because they are cheap, fast
and reliable
The five most common types of biometric
identifiers are:
• Fingerprints
• Facial
• Voice
• Iris and
• Palm or finger vein patterns
Iris patterns vary more than fingerprints and face
shapes. They provide tighter security but people have
to stop to look into an iris scanner

Face shapes can be detected from further away, it is

quick and easy method but disadvantages are
threatens privacy, violates personal rights, data
vulnerabilities, misuse causing fraud and other crimes.

Finger print scanning advantages

are Uniqueness, Ease Of Use, Accountability, Cost-
effectiveness. But disadvantage is they will not
work with dirty and damaged fingers.
What are fingerprints?
Fingerprint is the pattern or design on your fingertip and everyone has a unique
fingerprint. Not even identical twins have the same fingerprint

Fingerprints are the most common biometric data used because it is economically

beneficial and fast.

There are 8 different types of fingerprint patterns: radial loop, ulnar loop, double
loop, central pocket loop, plain arch, tented arch, plain whorl, and accidental. But
the three most common types of fingerprint patterns are: loop, whorl and arch.

The purpose of fingerprints is that they can help us grab or grip object easily. Some
people don't have fingerprints and it is difficult for them to grip objects.
