SULTAN
ALIMUDIN I or
AZIM-UB DIN
 He was one of the first Muslim
leaders to forge friendly relations
with Spain by signing a peace
treaty in 1737.
 He revised the Sulu Code of Laws
and prepared the Arabic-Sulu
vocabularies for all Muslim priests.
 During his unjust imprisonment in
Manila in 1751, he facilitated,
through his daughter Fatima, the
release of 50 Christians in Jolo.

let them in to their territory that’s
why he was dethroned and exiled
along with his family and a few

DATU
AMPUANAGUS
 He led a battle against the American
colonial government in 1903, when his
fort at Taraca in Lanao was assaulted
and captured by American forces. Two
hundred of his men were killed. He
surrendered along with six other datus
and 22 warriors.
 He resumed the war in 1906 by
ambushing an American force sent from
Camp Keithley destroy him. Later, a
bigger battle in Didanganin greatly
diminished his forces.
 In 1908, he and his men attacked
American forces in Dansalan with only
20 rifles.
 He later surrendered after the
negotiations between Muslim leaders
and the American government, marking
the end of Muslim resistance to
American rule. It was only in 1935 that
hostilities between the two resumed.

Datu Bago
 A Kagan, Tausug and
Maguindanawon descent
 settled in Bagobo Land, today’s
Davao City
 Davao City approved an
ordinance declaring Datu Bago as
a local hero (March 20, 2018)
 The ordinance recognized Datu
Bago as a “paramount warrior” or
called as a “Bawwangin” by the
local tribes who “fought long and
hard in keeping Davao Gulf free
from foreign control.”
 “Davao was the last unoccupied
territory in the Philippines and
Datu Bago heroically defended it
against the Spaniards,” the

Moro warriors attacked a trading
vessel called San Rufo, took the
cargo, and killed the traders and
crew, which provoked the anger of
Don Jose Oyanguren y Cruz.
Oyanguren was the Basque
conqueror who came and set Spanish
rule in the Davao province (1845).
“It was this incident that brought Datu
Bago into the pages of local history
books,” said Gaspar.
“He [Datu Bago] and his fellow
baganis,” Gaspar added, “resisted the
entry of the colonizers, thus making
Datu Bago one of the first local
heroes to oppose colonial rule, but of
course, long before he – very much
like Lapulapu and other indigenous
warriors – would have imbibed an
anti-colonial perspective in
contemporary terms.”
Datu Amai
Pakpak
 famous for resisting Spanish
subjugation efforts in the 19th century.
 Also known as Datu Akadir Akobar
 led the Muslim defenders in Fort
Marawi in both the 1891 assault by
Spanish Governor General Valeriano
Weyler and the 1895 invasion of
Governor Ramon Blanco
 lost the battle in 1891 but they
continued launching raids against the
Spaniards for four years
 Resisted Governor-General Valeriano
Weyler (1889 ) from occupying
Parang, Malabang and pursueing a
military campaign against the Iranun
and Maranaos causing the campaign
to hault in 1991
 died fighting the 5,000 Spanish troops
in 1895
Datu Kalun
(Calun) of Basilan
 Originally a Caviteño exiled to
Zamboanga for revolt against the
Spanish. His daughter holds a
rosary and Janggay.
 originally born as Pedro Javier
Cuevas (May 6, 1845 - July 16,
1904)
 belonged to a wealthy but rural
and educated family that belonged
to the Principalia, the native
Philippine nobility at the time of
Spanish rule
 was a Philippine militant, and the
Founder Father of Lamitan in the
Province of Basilan

soldiers in flushing out the rest of
Spanish forces in the southern
Philippines
 Rejected the offer of the U.S.
Armed Forces with a leadership
position within the Moro
Battalions, a native unit of the
U.S. Armed Forces consisting of
native fighters from Muslim
