Angular Momentum
Equilibrium is a condition
where there is no change in the
state of motion. The body is
either at rest or moving with
constant velocity in the same
direction.
FORCE SYSTEMS
1. Concurrent forces are forces acting on
a common point, thus, the body does
not rotate. A particle or a point mass
experience concurrent forces.
2. Non- Concurrent forces are forces
acting on different points on a body
causing it to rotate. It occurs in a rigid
body or extended body that do not
change size and shape.
Conservation of Angular Momentum

The difference between conservation

of angular momentum and
conservation of linear momentum is
that the interaction that changes the
angular momentum is torque rather
than a force.
Answer the following:
2.A sharpening wheel is traveling at 5
rad/s, it slows down to rest in 30 seconds
while sharpening an ax. What is its
angular acceleration?

3. A fan spins through 600 radians in 10

seconds. What is its angular velocity?
4. What is the angular momentum
of a 0.25 kg mass rotating on the
end of a piece of rope in a circle of
radius 0.75m at an angular speed of
12.5 rad/s?
5. A figure skater rotates on the ice at a
rate of 3.5 rad/s with her arms extended
horizontally. When she lowers her arms
to her side, she speeds up to 7.5 rad/s.
Find the ratio of her moment of inertia in
the first case to that in the second case.
6. Suppose a teenager puts her
bicycle on its back and starts the
rear wheel spinning from rest to a
final angular velocity of 250 rpm in
5.00 s. Calculate the angular
acceleration in rad/s2.
7. A centrifuge rotates so that
0.25 m from the center is
traveling at 343 m/s (the speed of
sound). What is its angular
velocity?
8. A baton twirler spins a
baton at 25 RPM, what is
its angular velocity in
rad/s?
1.How long will the helicopter blade
turn through 200 radians if its angular
velocity is 60 rad/s?

2. What is the angular momentum of a

7100 g mass rotating on the end of a
piece of rope in a circle of radius 0.82 m
at an angular speed of 5.4 rad/s?
