Background
Language is a communication tool used by everyone in everyday life as a means of conveying information and
arguments to others. According to Chomsky, language is a natural object, a component of the human mind, which is
physically represented in the brain and part of the species' biological endowment (Chomsky, 2002: 1). English is an
international language that has been used globally.
Writing is one of the language skills that will never be abandoned education. Writing is not an easy activity and
students can just do it, because writing is not an activity that only hits a pen or pencil on a sheet of paper. Palmer (2003:5)
states that writing is a movement that allows students to investigate and express their thoughts, communicate what they
think and know, and ask questions. In the same sense, writing can be interpreted as an activity that cannot be carried out
separated from student activity in the teaching and learning process. Richards & Renandya (2002: 303) states that writing
is the most difficult skill to master because of the difficulty in generating, organizing, and translating ideas into readable
text.
Descriptive text is a type of text whose purpose is to describe an object, place, or
person in a way that creates a vivid impression in the readers’ mind, enabling the reader
to visualize what is being described, and to feel that s/he is very much part of the
writer’s experience (Tompkins, 1994:111).
After the researchers practiced teaching at SMP Negeri 5 Pematangsiantar,
researchers could immediately see how the students' interest in learning, especially in
English subjects. Where students' interest in learning is still lacking especially English
is a foreign language so students don't really care about learning English. Various
methods have been used by researchers, one of which is to give motivation that
learning English has many benefits for students. However, students still don't care and
underestimate English lessons. Therefore, researchers are looking for creative ideas to
attract students' attention so that students can be interested in learning English, one of
which is writing skills.
Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) as a learning medium that is applied to
improve students' skills in writing descriptive text (Calhoun, 1999). Picture Word
Inductive Model (PWIM) is one of them strategies that can be applied to various
levels of students. It can too focused on all language skills, especially reading and
writing skills. PWIM is used to assist and guide students in the writing process
activities as well as in organizing their writing. In addition, it is expected to make
students are not bored in the learning process. Especially if the pictures presented
by the teacher have colorful pictures, it will make students more enthusiastic and
more curious. This model is useful for junior high school students either grade one
or grade two to write descriptive text because of that encourage students to express
their ideas, opinions, and thoughts on their writing. In addition, PWIM directs
researchers to have a guide about what should be taught in class using images
related to the content material being taught, they feel part of the class community
and can participate in class activities.

II. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Writing
 Definition of Writing
Linblom (1983) states writing as a way of learning to focus our mind on
important matter, and learning about them. By writing activity, a person can find
the solution of a difficult problem; a person can also master the fact and even by
writing. This is because the process of writing needs a greater attention on the problem.
In this condition, a writer gives some effort to explore as many ideas as
possible and tries to communicate to the reader intended.Based on the opinion above,
the researcher concludes that writing is the
way where the writer expresses all the ideas in his/her mind into the paper, so the
reader can follow the writers’ messages.
 The importance of writing
Byrne in Kartini (2001) stated that there are many reasons why writing is
important, some of them are:
1) Writing is a tool for discovery, we stimulate our thought process by the act soft
2) writing and tap into information image we have in our unconscious minds.
3) Writing generates new ideas by helping us to make connection and see relationship.
4) Writing down ideas allows writer distance theirselves from them and evaluate
them.
5) Writing helps to organize the ideas; arranging them in coherent form
6) Writing down ideas allows writer distance theirselves from them and evaluate
them.
7) Writing helps us to absorb and process information, when we write about topic,
we learn it better.
8) Writing on a subject, makes us become active learners rather than passive
learners of information.Picture
Descriptive text is a text which the purpose is to describe particular place, person,
or thing. Anderson (1998:26) stated that descriptive text is the text to tell about the
subject by describing its feature without including personal opinions.
Descriptive text should be able to make the reader image and know exactly about the
place, person or thing that is described. According to Clouse (2004:143) there are some
purposes of description:
a. To entertain
b. To express feeling
c. To relate experience
d. To inform (for a reader unfamiliar with the subject)
e. To inform (to create a fresh appreciation for the familiar)
It can be concluded that descriptive text is a text which is used
to describe information that contains a place, person, or thing. so that
the reader can image and know exactly about the place, person or thing that is described.
Generic Structure of Descriptive Text

To write descriptive text, the students are expected to understand the

generic structures and language features of descriptive text which help
them differentiate this type of text to another. According to Wardiman
(2008:122) a descriptive text has generic structures are as follows:
1) Identification : Identifies the phenomenon to be described.
2) Description : Illustrates the specific or detail information about
what we are going to describe :
a) Parts/things (physical appearance)
b) Qualities (degree of beauty, excellence, or worth/value)
c) Other characteristics (prominent aspects that are unique).
Language Feature of Descriptive Text

The language or linguistic features play significant role in

producing a good description. All of the linguistic features are
convoyed to construct vividly description of the subject. According to
Anderson (1998:26) descriptive text include the following language
features:
1) Using simple present tense.
2) Adjective to describe the features of the subject (attributive).
3) Frequent use classifiers in nominal groups.
4) Topic sentences to begin paragraphs and organize the various
aspects of the description.
According to Prastiyo (2018) making a good descriptive writing must
be understood about the space in order to make the reader is easier to
imagine the object by reading the writing itself.B.
According to Longman (2004) defines pictures as a description that gives you an
idea of what something is like. In short, picture is an observable, painting or frawing,
visual represents of a person, scene, place, animal, things situation which can be seen
clearly on frame or sheet of paper and as resemble a works of pictorial art that can
give you ideas. Pictures give an opportunity to review words or sentences that we
have learned from textbook. It means that picture can help the student to give an
idea, explore knowledge to describe something such as people, place, things, etc.

Latuheru (1989) and Raimes (1983:27) states that pictures provide a share
experience for students in the class as a common base that leads to a variety of
language activities.. According to Wright (1992:16), pictures make a particularly
powerful contribution to both the content and the process of language learning. She
also suggests that pictures can often be used to promote productive skills like
speaking and writing. As pictures can be used to assist students in stimulating the
students’ inspiration (Wright, 1992), pictures are used in this research to help the
students get involved and to get information on what they should write.
Pictures used in this study are pictures associated with words. Picture
Word Inductive Model (PWIM) strategy is introduced by Emily F.
Calhoun (1999) on his book “Teaching beginning reading and writing
with the Picture Word Inductive Model”. PWIM is an inquiry-oriented
language arts strategy that uses pictures containing familiar objects and
actions to elicit words from children’s listening and speaking
vocabularies (Calhoun, 1999:21). Essentially, students study various
pictures and then find the object they see, while the teacher draws a line
to the corresponding word or phrase

IV.RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Subject of the Research

The subject of this research is the grade seven students of SMP Negeri
5 Pematangsiantar. We implemented Picture Word Inductive Model in
VII-2 class.

Object of the Research

The object of this research is the ability of the students in writing

Descriptive Text
Research Procedure

● The teachers asked the students previous knowledge about Descriptive text. The researcher explained
the definition of descriptive text, the social function of descriptive text and the language features of
descriptive text.
● The teachers showed a picture on the whiteboard and invited students to find words/phrase related to
the picture.
●  The teachers explained how to create sentences from the words/phrases that found in the picture.
●  The teachers divided students into groups of five to six students and gives some pictures to the
groups and asked them to choose the most favorite and assigns the groups to find vocabularies from
the picture selected and makes lines individually.
●  The teachers involved the students in group to change the words into sentences.
●  And the last , the teachers asks students to present the results of group work in front of the class.
Technique of Collecting Data

Data collecting method is the method that was used by the teachers to collect the data. The data
would be collected by using Subjective Test (Essay test ).

Technique of Data Analysis

Data analysis will be carried out after all the required data has been completely collected. In this
research, the researchers will use pattern/formulate to find out the mean of students score and the
percentage of students who pass the KKM (70).

FINDINGS

The finding from this mini research consist of the rate of percentage of the students score and mean
score. The students scores with the rate of percentage taught by using PWIM in teaching writing
descriptive text has reached KKM (70) score in VII-2 class is 74,20 %. . While the mean of the test is
74,9. It shows that there is the effect of PWIM of grade seven students of SMP Negeri 5
Pematangsiantar.
DISCUSSION

This research is intended to find out: whether the use of Picture Word Inductive Model
(PWIM) improves the students’ ability in writing descriptive text, and whether Picture Word
Inductive Model (PWIM) is interesting to the students in writing descriptive text. The
description data collected through writing test as explained showed that the use of PWIM could
improve and interest the students’ ability in writing descriptive text. There are possible
explanations for the result found in this research.

From the analysis of the data, the researchers can be concluded that the students’ writing ability
of the seven grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Pematangsiantar significantly improved after using
Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) as treatment in learning. It was also proven by the
students score that most of them could achieve the score above 70 which also mean they could
achieve the minimum completeness criteria (KKM) of English lesson and the mean score of
students’ interest is 74,9 means it is in positive category according to the range of students.
CONCLUSION

Based on the findings and discussion in the previous chapter, the researchers conclude that the
students from grade VII-2 SMP Negeri 5 Pematangsiantar, is significant affect the students’
writing descriptive text with PWIM where mean is 74,9 . The percentage of students who gained
KKM score is 74,20%.
The use of Picture Word Inductive Model in writing skill descriptive text is effective to grade VII-
2 of SMP Negeri 5 Pematangsiantar.
