CIRCLES IN THE
COORDINATE
PLANE
The point where two axes intersect is
known as the origin. Its coordinates are
(0,0) which means that the origin is along
with x- axis and y- axis. The two numbers
within the parenthesis are the x- and y-
coordinates of any point on the graph.
STANDARD FORM OF A
CIRCLE
The equation of a circle, with the
origin as its center and with radius r,
is given by
+=
EXAMPLES
1.Find the equation of a circle with center at (0, 0) and
radius 7.
2. Find the equation of a circle with center at (0, 0)
and radius 13.
3.Determine the center and radius of a circle whose
equations + = 32
Solution #1

r=7

+ = 49
The standard form of the equation of
a circle with center at (h, k) and
radius r is
(x- + (y- =
Find the equation of a circle with
center at (-3, 2) and radius 4 units.

• (h, k) = (-3, 2) r = 4
• (x- + (y- =
• [(x-(-3) + (y - 2 =
• (x+ + (y- = 16
Try this!!!

Find the equation of a circle with

center at (-5, 7) and radius 5 units.

The general form of the
equation of a circle
The general form of the equation of a
circle is
+ A= 0
Where A ҂ 0
EXAMPLES
Give the general form of the following
equations:
1. (+(= 4
2. (+(= 6
3. (+(= 6
4. (+(= 7
